Default What is your hosp. procedure for GD?

    Just curious...

My hasn't mentioned anything about inducing early...at all...I don't think she believes I've NEVER been in labor on my own.

I've always been induced at 41 or more weeks (save my #2 who was induced 40 weeks for fear of a ....not so nice birth like #1)....

I've scared myself to death about the GD diagnosis.....not for anything related to MY health just the baby's health...just reading about stillbirths and stuff....I know never read while pregnant (I never learn apparently).

Read some docs like inducing at 38-39...read some like to let it go "naturally"...some prefer c-sec at 37 weeks....

I'm not trying to get into a debate just curious what is the typical for YOUR OB/Hosp.

I had GD with all three of mine. No problems at all with it..If you dont have any problems with it during your prego time then labor should be no problem to...I had to check mine everyday while I was prego and it never got very high at all, unless I ate to many things that I should have not ate anyway. My first two boys I had natural with no meds my last time my twins I had lots and lots of other prblems the hole time but not DG related tho and they had to do a c-section for them, my GD test showed up postive for my twins but even with all the other problems I had the GD never gave my any problem at all..

each time I just remember them asking me if I had any trouble with my DG and that was it..so I guess if you have problems with it they would however do something different when you go into labor.

My doctor's policy is to start monitoring at 40 weeks, see if things go naturally until 41 weeks and then look at induction, but not go past 42. I've heard that there are some indications that going past 42 can start to lead to degregation of the cord, not to mention just how uncomfortable it would be for you!

I know it's easier said than done with some doctors, but at your next appt can you address your concerns? Make it clear that you're not concerned about the labor on your end, but rather the baby as well as wanting to make sure he/she doesn't get too big or have other complications.

I'm at the other end of the spectrum in that I go early and I have some cord complications this time around which we have to monitor for growth restriction. My doctor was really sketchy about a lot of stuff related to my SUA so I really had to push to get the information out of him. Good luck getting your concerns heard and actual information from your doctor!

I had GD with DD1 three years ago. I was on a very strict diet and my sugars numbers where still climbing. I started insulin injections at 30 weeks.

I was only a little overweight when getting pregnant, 5'4" and 148lbs.

It was protocol at my OB's office to induce between 38-39 weeks with insulin dependent GD moms. I was also having non-stress tests twice a week and an ultrasound once a week to check fluid levels from 30 weeks on when I started the insilun.

I was induced at 38 weeks. I went into full labor with just the cervadil, didn't need to get the pitocin at all. Labor and delivery were non-complicated. DD was born 10 hours after I was first administered the cervadil.

DD weighed 7lbs, 1oz at birth. Because of the strict diet and exercise program, I only gained 22 lbs with that pregnancy. My sugar returned to normal after her birth.

Did not have GD with DD2, born this past winter. But I followed the GD diet for the increased risk from the time the test was positive. DD2 was born without induction at 39 weeks weighing 8lbs, 7oz. I gained 28lbs with her.

Good luck with the GD. Although it was a pain to follow the diet and exercise, give myself insulin injections, and go all the NST appts, my case was controlled with a happy and healthy outcome.

I had GD with both and induced at 39 weeks each time. Even with monitoring sugars during the day and regular exercise(and meds at night), baby #1 was over 9 lbs and #2 was just shy of 9 lbs! My OB felt strongly given weight estimates that it was either induction at 39 wks (if natural labor hadn't started yet) or a likely C section if post 39 weeks due to potential for 11 lb baby. I had great outcomes with both and (fairly) easy labors, and I gained less than 20 lbs with each so no complaints about that. Good luck!

OP - I don't have any advice as it has been years since I had GD (23yrs LOL) So, just a side note. Back then I was told that I would be at higher risk of getting Type 2 Diabetes in my 40s due to getting GD. Guess what, I did. So,even after delivery it is good to watch your weight and what you are eating to keep your sugars on the normal end.

Best wishes for a healthy pregnancy.
