I bought a potty training video at a thrift store. I thought it was totally nerdy but my grandson watched it a couple of times and seemed really into it. People seem to think kids are trained by two but in reality boys at least don't seem very interested until they are at least three. You are just banging your head against the wall until they are ready.

The average age for a boy is 3 1/2.

IMO potty training for 99% of kids should be accomplished within about a week. If they are not getting the hang of it...then it's too soon. Save yourself a bunch of clean up...put diapers back on...and try again in the summer.

With both of my boys I had success with using plastic pants. The kind that are suppposed to go over cloth diapers. I put the plastic pants over their underwear and didn't have them wear any pants or jeans at all. When they would have an accident I wouldn't rush to change them. I would let them be wet for a few minutes....and believe me they were wet because the plastic pants don't absorb anything, they just hold the urine in the very wet underwear. My boys hated that super wet feel and within a couple of days things were much better. Good luck---I am sooo glad that I am past that stage.

My now 20 yr old-I can't remember what age he was. He certainly wasn't some young thing...I think he must have been between 2.5-3yrs old....

What we did was I just let him run around with no bottoms what so ever on IN THE Apartment. He could "see" he was starting to go and would quick run to the bathroom. This worked for us....BUUUUTTT there is always a butt (haha)...Going #2 was a different story. He DEMANDED he go in the diaper. I think that went on for at least 6 months. He would literally HOLD IT until I put the diaper on, so he had control...Talk about frustrating...I think he might have been scared of the potty for some reason...I think I just ended up just saying tough no diaper, you must go on the potty...this was right before pull ups came out too I think...And at night? He is a boy so that went on for years - wetting the bed...YEARSSSSSSSSSSSS
My second kid was in Daycare and they taught him. Poor third kid...I don't remember but most likely was the same, I let him run around with no bottoms...Believe it or not, it doesn't take that long for them to get hang of it.

My SIL- she potty trained (her 3 boys) in the summer...just let them run around without pants and told them to pee on trees outside....She is a liberal-lives in Seattle...Worked for her...pretty sure my neighbors would have issue with that.

Side note-To this day we still talk about the time he was 3yr old came out of the bathroom and says "Mom, Dad, I pooped a gun!" I guess that is what happens when you won't buy or let others buy toy guns (even waterguns) for your children.
No, it didn't really look like a gun.
