Just wait it gets worse!! 11th grader and 8th grader
1st grade- Wonderful.
2nd grade - the kids love to see their friends from 1st grade and that grade is great.
3rd grade - A little harder but still easy and nice to feel like a big kid.
4th grade - Teacher pushes them, but provides the needed updates and study guides to help the student.
5th grade - OH MY!!! So this year the goal is to prepare for middle school. The teacher does not provide study guides (expects the students to read the chapers and learn it all by studing every night and classwork), Homework every night (even on weekends) in atleast 4 subjects, nightly(WOWZA) The list goes on.....
So needless to say, I would like to start 1st grade all over, because 5th grade is hard for us. I am counting down and we are 1/8th through the year. WOOHOO!
I agree it should prepare them, but WOW never knew is was like this. I guess they have to step it up a notch sometime.
Anyone else having a hard time adjusting to a new grade?

yep 6th grade is WORSE then 5th here 6th is still elementary so dd has homework every day. has to read for 40 minutes, she doesnt get home from school till 4 so Im sure you can imagine what time she is finished! by Thursday she is so tired! we have to do a HUGE breakfast (which she hate because she is not a breakfast person) because lunch isnt until 1220! and by then she is starving. On top of that she wants to play the Viola agiain this year so theres another 20 minutes of practice every day!

Our situation is alot like yours. The 2nd day of school at B2S night, my dd's teacher announced he is known as the homework king. :( I am all for homework (grade appropriate levels) but was not happy to hear og homework on the weekend. We have family commitments then and feel that homework expected to be done is not ok.
I am hoping to reason with the teacher - I feel your pain. My dd will be in middle school next year too (YIKES!!!) Hope I am getting the wrong feeling about this all.
Oh my!! You're scaring me. DD is in 2nd. and I THOUGHT it was bad.
I'm not happy with third grade homework so far. Spending your entire evening doing nothing but homework...rots and is pointless IMO.
all it does it help kids really dislike school.

My sons had a 50pt test on the third day of school based on the summer reading assignment. We are already really quite used to the crazy amounts of work. After the initial adjustment, it does get easier - if that helps!
No homework on weekends here
My DS is in 6th grade and its not so bad. He has to read for 30 minutes every night and on weekends. He usually has a math assignment each night, but not on weekends. Sometimes he has other assignments but they do not take long. Some kids have more homework, if they do not finish their stuff in class.
