PREGGO How much clothing for a newborn?

I'm trying to figure out how much the baby needs so I don't overbuy. I like to keep enough clothing to last about 2 weeks w/out washing. How many of each of these should I get?

pants
onesies/t-shirts
rompers (no feet)
pjs (feet)
dresses

ETA: This is the 5th child. I just can't remember how many of each thing is realistic and reasonable. I remember w/ my 3 yo not having enough 3-6 mo for some reason and having to send my mom for nb things b/c he swam in 0-3 for weeks.

I would not buy anything size NB - go straight to 0-3 months - the first 10 days or so based on birth weight the clothes will be baggy but after that you are set. This depends on weather and when you are due. I hated dresses the first 6 weeks - she was thin and I did not want her to be cold or have to wrap her in a blanket in July. I kept outfits with feet no onesies underneath on her all the time. Her clothes were interchangable - day outfits could be slept in. I had a summer baby.

Other determinations will be if she has any spit up issues but honestly my dd was changed outfits about once a day - she just did not get dirty.

Unless doing laundry is really cumbersome - (laundromat) I would just plan to wash - even if you wash weekly - they may only wear an outfit twice before it is outgrown.

Default Re: How much clothing for a newborn?

IMO I would pick up a few NB items. DS was almost 9lb's and easily fit into NB clothing for about 1 month. 0-3 was way too big on him. DD was 6lb's and easily wore NB clothing for almost 2 months.

DD was very spitty so we pretty much kept a bib on her at all times. If I didn't, I'd end upchanging her at least 2 times a day. Having (2) summer babies I had a ton of onesies. I'd plan on 1-2 a day at least if you don't want to do the wash that often.

Pants: 5 pairs (my little ones rarely wore them though....)
Dresses: We never used
Footed p.j.'s: 5 (my LO's mostly slept in onesies in the summer, especially when swaddled so they would not overheat)

GL!!

I had 2 kiddo's that ended up in newborn for months. The other one was only for a couple of weeks.

Buy a couple of outfits so you have something nice...and then I would probably stick to sleepers.

When are you due? If it's dead of winter...I'd probably buy more than when it's summer and a onsie will do. Also for most newborn clothes I would go to a consignment store and buy them there...so I wasn't paying a lot of OOP for them.

I liked to have about 2 weeks worth of clothing too..cause well...that lasted about 4 days with a newborn LOL. You get much less and you end up being a slave to the washing machine.

it would help to know when you are due....that really makes a difference in what you will need.

we had "washing issues" too, since we didn't have a washer and dryer in our first place with DD. he was a summer baby and we quickly learned the wonderfulness that are onesies. He lived in them and bibs for the rest of the summer(he was born in July). So for this next baby, she's all stocked up on onesies too(induction is this friday). We have a few newborn outfits, mostly because they were on clearance at target and I know that if we don't get too many uses out of them, they will be taken right to Kid2Kid for credit towards something she can wear later on.

She has only about 2 or 3 dresses for each size up until 1 year, with the dresses correlating with the season(6 to 9 month winter outfit, etc.). Unless you will be taking kiddos to day care or with a daily babysitter, I don't see the harm in stocking up on just inexpensive jumpers and onsies.

I agree with previous poster unless you are going out, doing pics etc. I would just stick mainly with sleepers, gowns etc. They have so many cute ones, they are comfy & it's easier to change all those diapers with out having outfits with lots of pieces & fasteners. The zip up sleepers are so much easier to deal with late at night than the snap up ones too!

I'm not a fan of onesies.. I hate buttoning and un buttoning them.. just annoying! If you are breastfeeding you won't need as many clothes but if you choose formula it's staining and gets the clothes messy with burp ups and what not. I would just go with about two outfits a day.

Default Re: How much clothing for a newborn?

Here's what we had for DS (I just put his nb stuff away a few days ago!):

11-12 onesies

1 long-sleeved onesie

2 "outfits" - onesies with matching pants, one had a matching button up longsleeved shirt (and honestly - pants are just a pain when you're changing diapers 8-10 times a day - we used these only when taking him out)

4 footed sleepers

3-4 short-sleeved "rompers" I guess they're called - no feet and kind of short legs

3-4 hats, socks, mittens

1 jacket (we're in Colorado - we still have snow in May!)

DS was in newborn for about 2 months (he was 3 months premature - so he was in it for the full weight range - I think this is probably not the case for a full-term baby) - from early April to early June. I think I did laundry maybe every 3-4 days - this wasn't so much due to lack of clothes though, as it was due to not wanting to wait on blowouts.

HTH!

My kids stain a lot of clothes and they are strictly breastfed.

I don't like onesies much either except in the summer because they are lightweight.

If you are worried about stains, get some borax... it is awesome stuff and use it with a drop of dawn-- you can soak it and then let it sit without washing for a few days and it still comes out.

Yep...It definitley depends when you are due. In general, I would say if you want to not wash for 2 weeks you'd need:

pants - 3
onesies/t-shirts - 20
rompers (no feet) - 3
pjs (feet) - 7
dresses - 1 (maybe)

Obviously, this all depends upon how much you are going out, how fancy you want her, and how often you wash. I based my numbers above on not washing for 2 weeks. I can't imagine getting away with that in my house! I wish you luck!
