Default Baby Laundry Detergent?

Hi everyone,

So I am pregnant with my first child - due any day now! I was thinking about laundry detergent today. I know the stores sell the specialized detergent meant just for babies, like dreft. But it is so expensive! I know this probably depends on the baby and their skin sensitivity and all, but is special baby laundry detergent really necessary? I already use All Free & Clear and was hoping that would be good for the baby stuff since the detergent is free of dyes and hypoallergenic. Thanks for the help!

A friend of mine's husband is an ER doctor and he could not get over the fact that his wife sent him to the store to purchase "baby detergent" and how expensive it was. (This was before their son was born). He called one of his allergist friends and asked him if it was really necessary. The allergist told him it was better to use something like All Free and Clear because it doesn't have the perfumes and such that help make it "smell like a baby". He said he got a lot of patients coming in with reactions to the traditional baby laundry detergents and recommends that parents just use something like Free and Clear. HTH!

I use Tide Free w/ DS who has had some nasty eczema. The Dr is the one who suggested it because there are no added perfumes.

We used the TIde free too when the kids were little.

I never had a problem with the baby detergents breaking out the kids skin... but it didn't take out baby stains!!

This! I use Tide Free and it works great for my ds who has eczema. It also works on his cloth diapers and doesn't fade clothes.

I always wondered if the baby detergents worked as well as the 'adult' ones…seems like an awful lot of money for something that doesn't clean as well!

With my son I used one of the regular "free and clear" detergents (don't remember which one) for a little while but I switched to normal detergent and he was fine. My daughter has had normal detergent used on her clothing since birth and has been fine. I am also able to switch between brands with no allergy issues so I feel pretty lucky that I can get some pretty great deals without compromising my kids' comfort. My mother in law was so offended that I didn't use Dreft because she used it on her kids blah, blah, blah . I guess it just comes down to if your kids skin is sensitive and what you use on your own clothes.
