There are many homeschooling websites that will answer your questions. The first thing to do is find out about homeschooling laws in your state. Then you pick a curriculum that works for you. When you get to high school age, there are lots of online studies, tests, attendance records, grading, etc that you can use. But for right now, don't worry about the high school. Just concentrate on 3rd grade. We only do about 2-3 hours per day, it just depends on the curriculum you are using about how fast your child goes through the work. I have only been doing this for a year, but feel free to PM me with any questions.

There is a group here on the board as well

Attention Homeschoolers: New Group Started!

Definitely check out your state regulations first. and HSLDA.

And seriously - one grade at a time. Don't worry about highschool - there are a lot of options out there. Takes some time and do some research - request the catalogs - do some searches.

General info books about homeschooling are usually available at your local library and they may know of local homeschooling support groups (my library gladly hands out the business cards for my support group). I've even heard that some have "new to homeschooling" packets with info on local and regional resources.
B&N, Borders and BAM all offer educators discounts to homeschoolers and usually have a decent selection of workbooks and other supplemental educational supplies.

I didn't know about the B&N discount. What proof do you need to show them to get the discount??

Most of the major office stores also acknowledge homeschool teachers with the same perks. You just need to fill out the applications and when you get to school name you can either give your homeschool a name or just put homeschool.

I highly recommend Cathy Duffy's website and book to get started along with homeschoolreviews. Cathy Duffy will help you find your style of teaching and your child's style of learning and how materials relate to both of you. Homeschoolreviews offers a plethora of links for curriculum, chit chat with both veterans and rookies, reviews and even used curriculum sales.

In GA I use a copy of my Declaration of Intent form as proof of homeschooling for any and all homeschooler/teacher discounts. Other states may not have something like that (TX comes to mind) so your best bet would be to call the store and ask what proof they need.
At the homeschool buyers coop there is a printable id card that might work. I've included the link to that specific page if you need it. Free to join and some of the deals they negotiate are quite good.
Homeschool Buyers Co-op: Homeschooling discounts, resources, and free curriculum.

The well trained mind forum is the most comprehensive forum I've found for homeschooling. Even if you're not teaching using the classical method, the depth of information over there will help you immensely.
