    Default Maternity Not Covered????

I got my individual insurance 3 years ago when I became self employed. I specifically told them I wanted to make sure Maternity was covered because you just never know. They told me it was covered as long as it didn't happen in the first 12 months. Welll....you can guess what has happened 3 years later, and they now say maternity is not covered. I have Aetna, has anyone had a child with no insurance coverage?????????? I have went from excited to super bummed in one phone call. On hold. they just told me they have a plan for 615 PER MONTH that I can add. HELP ANYONE?????????????
    If it isn't free.....it isn't for me!

They reserve the right to change plans at any time, I believe. You really need to read any updates they send very carefully.

I wouldn't try to have a baby with no insurance. Each of my entirely uncomplicated c-sections cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $25-30,000. Even a regular old delivery is not cheap.

You can check to see if your state has some form of maternity coverage for those who aren't covered otherwise. I know Maryland does.

Tennessee has maternity coverage also. I forget the name of the program, but I know a friend used it. It was a sliding scale type payment option.

I have friends with no maternity coverage. They set up a payment plan with the doctor and the hospital to have the cost of the birth completely paid for before the baby was born. One of the local midwifes in my area charges between 4,000 - $5,000 for prenatal, the birth and post-natal care.

I paid 5,000 for my midwife care, and then needed an emergency c-section due to breech presentation. I would highly HIGHLY recommend a midwife.

check to see if you qualify for your states medicaid or not, and if not, try a midwife, they are way less expensive than obgyn's and as long as there are no complications, then the oop cost should be maybe 3-4 thousand, alot of it depends on your area COL though.

If you go the medicaid route you will probably have to cancel your regular insurance......it's really going to depend on your income....and how many in your family and what you own.

this is one of the very many reasons....private insurance is a joke....they pull this crap constantly

I have anthem as my primary insurance and then medicaid healthy start healthy families program (Ohio) covers the rest. You may want to check it out. Also, if you can't afford the formula WIC could help with that if you qualify.

The hospital where I delivered (c-section) charged around $12000 and got paid almost $11000 by the insurance. Plus almost $3000 for the baby's stay. Myself and my baby had no complications. This was 2 months ago.

If I had to guess, you probably never had maternity coverage with that insurance. Maternity costs a lot with individual plans. Unless you saw a decrease in the cost of your plan (which to me would indicate that they dropped the maternity), more than likely it was never included. Believe me, it would not be the first time uneducated sales people told somebody something about insurance they were selling that was not true. We had this happend to us a few times. Even if you check and double check, it still can happen. We read everything now. I mean EVERYTHING. And when we call, we make note of the time and name of a person on the phone. Still, they can backpedal very easy. "Oh, the person you talked to was wrong"... Hear that often?

Is the father on the same insurance with you? There may be coverage for the baby through his insurance. Maternity coverage is a rider for medical insurance which means it is an add on that you pay extra to have. You really REALLY need to read through the explanation of coverages that the insurance company sends you each and every year to stay up on what is and isn't covered. (i.e. not all insurance covers flight for life or ambulances)
Checking with your state to see if there is coverage or with your OB to see what payment plans they offer may be a good idea. Otherwise $600/mo for 10 mos would still be less than a regular delivery w/o complications in most hospitals.
