    Default Soy formula??

I'm wondering, is it ok to give my baby soy formula even if she has no issues with regular formula? TIA

Mine were not formula-fed but I have read that you should not give soy formula unless directed by the doctor. It has something to do with the nutrients involved and adsorption. I am sorry I don't know more--hopefully you can get another response here.

Okay, I feel bad no one else has responded. I actually have found nothing about adsorption--I don't know where I read that!! Anyway, other than the obvious concern about a soy allergy (soy is one of the most common allergies), I did find this online:

Most doctors usually recommend giving babies cow's milk formula unless there seems to be an allergy or intolerance, in which case the doctor may recommend soy or hypoallergenic formula. Soy formula — with added iron — contains the nutrients your baby needs.
Some parents may worry after hearing or reading about certain soy concerns, particularly about phytoestrogens (hormone-like chemicals from plants) that are found in soy formulas. These concerns need to be studied further, but so far research has not found definite evidence that soy formulas negatively effect a child's development or reproductive system.
Soy formula should be used under the direction of your doctor, but it can be an alternative to cow's milk formula for full-term infants. However, soy formulas are not recommended for premature infants.

Of course I reccomend asking your doctor, but I don't think there is any reason not to give soy, unless they are allergic to it.

I've read parenting boards, and lots of parents give soy formula for dietary or personal reasons (ie the parents are vegetarian) I personally don't see how giving soy instead of milk from a cow is worse.

If you are trying to do the vegan thing...I can understand wanting to do soy...otherwise I would not suggest it...there have been some studies that show...a possibility that it can help predispose you for Diabetes.

So if it's for allergies or wanting your child to do a vegan diet...I would say it's okay...otherwise I would stick with a regular formula.

I would NOT under any circumstance! I have read and read tons about soy. We avoid soy altogether. I have seen photos in medical journals of 3 year olds with pubic hair. Girls reach puberty at 7 years of age. The one day amount of soy formula had hormones (I forgot exactly how much it is, but I think it was) equivalent to 30 birth control pills.Outrageous!
Soy has been linked to cause tumors, shrink brain cells, age...
The only soy safe to consume is soy sauce because it is fermented and the hormones are destroyed in the process.
Check out DR. WESTON PRICE.ORG web site, that's the one I remember from the top of my head.

I breast-fed, but if I could not, I would not give her soy. Just my 2 cents.

Just curious, what would you have given instead? My son had extreme difficulty latching on and ended up having a milk allergy, so we gave him soy formula. What else would I have been able to give him? What do the experts say about circumstances like that where you need soy? I can only find the "black and white" stances, and no in between answers.

My son had a MSPI Milk soy protein intollerance....he was pooing blood from regular formula...and we were told to absolutely not to put him on soy..as that vast majority of babies that react to milk based formula react to soy formula...and so we had to put him on nutramagin.

Ususally they are put on either Nutramagin or Alimentum...and if they still cannot tolerate those (hypoallergenic formula's) they are put on either Elecare of Neocate which are amino acid based formulas.

Now usually MSPI is grown out off...so at 10 months we first put him on soy formula...and since he handled that okay...we were able to put him back onto reg formula a month later.

When my daughter was born...since MSPI is often something multiple siblings have...we were told to immediatly put her on the nutramagin...and then at 4 months...since her gut had never been introduced to milk or soy protien...that we should be able to do regular formula then...which is what we did. Any other children we have...we will do the same.

If I was in the situation...where my child could tolerate soy but not milk... at a year I would look at hemp milk or almond milk. Hemp milk in particular has some good fat in it...and is more complete than the others (except for soy formula that is enriched). Rice milk is just about pointless...white water is all that stuff is.

Soy messes with your estrogen levels as well...and is thought to possibly cause some cancers where estrogen is the issue (like breast cancer).
