Default Why is nursery decor so freaking expensive?? UPDATE IN POST #18

Maybe I just have expensive taste, but I've looked at ALL the major baby places (BRU, Target, WM, Baby Depot, etc.) at all of the nursery themes - and the ONLY ONE I liked was Disney Princess Dreams Come True at BRU.

The 4-pc crib set is like $169!! I thought perhaps it was so expensive because it's "Disney", but I found plenty of other non-name brand sets for more. Anyway, the lamp is $45, etc. It's ridiculous!!

But I'm a sucker and will probably buy it 'cause it's the only one that I like.

ETA: I had another thought....updated in post #18.....

I always think that I am "oh so frugal" and have "simple" tastes - but it is not really true. If I bought what I really love....I would spend a fortune. I usually compormise in the middle - but it is hard to have champagne tastes on a beer budget!

For my wedding, I picked out a very simple ring - yeah, it was $4000. I do not wear a lot of jewelry so wanted something simple! Ha ha ha. Ended up with a band that I really love for $300.

Maybe you can save money by making your own wall hangings, etc. They sell very cheap frames at IKEA--and if you could get some great pictures and do fun stuff with them on the computer and print and put them in the frames, it could be cute. Also consider doing some kind of mural on the wall if you are artistic--or hire a friend's high school budding artist to do it for you. =)

Price usually depends on what it's made of and how much detailed work is put into it ...then there's the "brands" Disney - you're gonna pay up the butt because..it's "Disney".
There are many reasonable priced crib bedding sets...but they aren't Disney.

They charge outrageous amounts for it because people will happily pay it.

When I decorated my son's nursery, I got the wall sticks for Curious George and bought a cheap mobile that I could change out the animals to what I wanted. Then I made the curtains, mobile pieces, and bumper. Very inexpensive and was exactly what I wanted. His room probably cost me $45-$50.

With my daughter's nursery (for this baby) we are doing Winnie the Pooh. I found pictures that I liked. I printed them off the computer and colored them in myself. I also found some material and made the mobile characters and used the mobile I had bought for my son. My mom made a Winnie the Pooh sheet and we are using a breathable bumper. She will be in the same room as DS to start with so the curtains are his curtains (Cars) and since I reused the mobile from him that saved $ also. Her room decor probably cost me around $20. I will be buying some material to make her a few more sheets just so they are what we want.

JMHO With my 1st daughter, everything had to be Winnie the Pooh, and so it was. What a waste of money! She lived in a bassinet in our room until 6mths, then transitioned into her room. Other than sleeping, she was never in it, and we only went in to get diapers or her clothes. Then, when she turned 2, we had DD#2 and put her in the nursery. We then made a "big girl" room for DD#1. Disney Princesses, pink everywhere, bedding, curtains, wallhangings, the whole 9 yards. Yeah, she is loyal to the blanket, so it goes everywhere with us. But as far as the money we put into the decor and paint, NOT WORTH IT! Even DD#2 in the Winnie the Pooh nursery, has a scooby-doo blanket that goes everywhere with her, but could care less about the decor of the room.
What it comes down to is that, we decorate, paint and fancy up a room thinking the kids will "just love it", when in fact we do it for us. We do it to show our friends and family. We do it thinking its a way to "welcome" baby into our lives and home. But whatever you choose, when they start choosing Blues Clues over Thomas the Train, or Yo Gabba Gabba over Jungle animals, we will, as parents, jump to re-decorate accordingly, thus spending more money on something the kids really dont care about anyway. lol!

Because stores have you thinking you "need" all of this baby stuff when you really don't! We are getting ready to have our first child in a couple of weeks and went shopping out of town (we live in the middle of no where) to get the rest of the baby stuff we were going to need. While in Babies R Us, my husband and I were completely stessing out over a $10 item that we probably didn't need anyway, when he looks at me and says, "This is so dumb, I make multi million dollar decisions on a daily basis (he runs a utility company) and you decide people's lively hood for a living (I was, until very recently, an HR Director), and we are freaking out over a $10 item our baby may or may not really need!"

We busted out laughing and gave each other a big hug and kiss in the middle of the store! Really, in the end, you just have to keep them clean, fed, warm, and loved!
