QUESTION Transitioning baby to sippy cup

With DS #1, we had great luck with the Nuby soft valve gripper cups. We put milk in it and gave it to him on his first birthday, and never had a problem. DS #2 is going to celebrate his first birthday very soon, and I want to switch him from bottles to sippy cups. So I already bought a bunch of the Nuby cups for DS #2.

I've tried giving him juice in one of the sippy cups before, but he wasn't interested, even after tasting the juice. I tried putting his formula in the sippy cup this morning. Since I was trying to change his diaper and dress him, I laid him down while he was drinking it. He had no trouble getting formula out of it, but it seemed like it was coming out too quickly because it was spilling out of the side of his mouth, and he kept stopping to catch his breath.

I always thought that it was harder to get liquid out of sippy cups, not easier. I don't think the cup was defective because when I turned it over, it didn't leak or anything. I sat him up and showed him how to hold the cup up. But he eventually got frustrated because he couldn't just chug it down like he does with his bottles (they have a medium flow nipple), and handed the cup back to me and fussed until I put the formula in a bottle for him.

Should I just keep trying the Nuby cup and hope that he eventually learns that he can't gulp it down like he does with his bottles? Or should I try another kind of cup?

I am having the same problem. My DS (one on monday) will drink water with no problem out of a sippy cup since he was 8 mths. old. Whenever I put juice or formula in the sippy cup he has no interest in it! He pushes my face and the cup away when I put formula in it! I am trying to trasition him to milk now too and am struggling. He will only drink the milk from an open topped cup.

IMO there are very few good sippy cups. They tend to pour out a little too fast and seemed to be soo messy and very hard to clean! DD did fine with them but I couldn't stand them and transitioned her to a no spill/straw variety a couple of months ago. She seems to really enjoy the straw and drinks so much more water and juice than she did from the other sippy cups. At 15 mos she should be able to drink from an open cup and I am looking forward to that!

With DS we went to the straw cup. He didn't like the sippy, but with the straw cups he had no problem. We eventually bought sippy cups also, but he was probably 18 mos before he got the grasp on how to use a sippy, he just did better with the straw cup and to this day makes less mess with a straw cup than sippy cup.

Default Re: Transitioning baby to sippy cup

I tried him with a straw cup last night, and he wouldn't even try to drink from it. He grabbed the cup, but as soon as the straw touched his mouth, he moved his head away. I think it's maybe because the nipples on his bottles are really wide, and the straw is so narrow- he just doesn't know what to do with it.

I think I'm just going to buy a different kind of cup to try. With DS #1, after he chewed through all the Nuby spouts, we got him a hard top sippy cup that had a valve under the lid. I think it had "big kid" in the title or something, but the lid had a wide rim on it, similar to the rim of an regular cup.

It seems like when DS #2 bites on the Nuby spout, he's able to suck out way too much liquid. With a hard top cup that has a valve underneath, he'll have to suck really hard to get the liquid through the valve and should get less liquid out. At least, that's what I'm hoping. Now I just have to try to remember the name of those other cups!

Playtex has a soft spouted sippy that has the valve underneath. The lid has handles on it. They also have hard spouted sippy's with the valve underneath. The valves are removable so easier cleaning and replaceable too so you can get rid of them when they start leaking and get new valves cheaper than all new cups. Just another idea.

When I transitioned my older two, I put water only in the bottles, everything else went in a sippy cup.

Don't give in - if they are thirsty enough they'll drink from the cups.

Default Re: Transitioning baby to sippy cup

I bought a pack of the rubber-tipped spout cups with the valve underneath, and he would put it in his mouth, but not attempt to get any milk out. And then he'd hand it back to me.

I remembered that with DS #1, he was on the fast flow bottle nipples prior to me trying a sippy cup with him. And DS #2 is only on the medium flow. So I bought some fast flow nipples for his bottle, thinking that if he gets used to a quicker flow on the bottle, maybe he'll be better able to handle the flow on those Nuby cups.

Well, he took to the fast flow with no problem and is finishing his bottles in half the time. But when I give him a Nuby cup with the soft spout, he'll suck out a mouthful of milk and then stop. He'll do this a few times and then hand the cup back to me and will fuss until he gets a bottle.

I tried putting water in his bottle. This boy has never had water before, and HATES cold liquids/foods, so I put cold water in there. And was I surprised when he started chugging down that water! Apparently he'll drink anything I put in the bottle, but nothing from a sippy cup. :shrug7:

My DS never went to fast flow nipples. He was on slow flow forever and only had medium flow because I couldn't find new slow flow to replace his when I needed them. It sounds like you are just going to have a rough time switching him. If he is absolutely refusing, then maybe the bottles have to disappear and anything he wants to drink is in a sippy, just another idea.
