Can anyone recommend a good white noise machine?

I've been looking for one for my son to help him sleep better and I'm having a hard time picking one out. Does anyone have one they can recommend? I would like to spend somewhere between $50-60. Any feedback is much appreciated. Thanks!

My SIL has used a radio turned to a smooth music station (low volume) for years for my nephew. As for DH and I, we have stand fans in our room as well as the kids room not only to move the air around a bit, but to create the "white noise" effect. It works for us.

I'm lying in bed with my laptop, about to drift off to the Homedics "sound spa" white noise machine we've been using for years. The kids have another Homedics in their room. The white noise is fantastic for masking out distracting noises and helping us all to sleep. I wouldn't bother worrying about how many different fancy nature sounds any sound machine can make. I only play with them once in a while for novelty value, but always use the good old white noise for sleep.

DS (32) has his desktop in his bedroom, and he has his prefered white noise music playing all night. When he is away from home, he really has a hard time sleeping without it. When he first moved in it bothered me in the next room, but now I am used to it.

My neighbors in this duplex use the fan method. I turn on my bedroom television when I get up in the morning, and I was worried about the noise, but she told me that they cannot sleep without the noise from their fans running, so they cannot hear my television anyway.

Me, I like it really quiet to get to sleep, but everybody is different.

BTW, Happy New Year to all in my very first online post of 2010.

We got a air purifier (we honestly searched for the loudest).

Fans - We were worried about fingers getting hurt.

White Machines- O.K. But, I like the dual function of an air purifier.
