Nurse Thinking of getting an IUD.. any thoughts? UPDATE

I just had my 4 child.. and I am DONE!

But my hubby thinks he wants more... little does he know, I will win this one!

Anyway... I wanted something rather then the daily pill, but since I am nursing my choices are limited. I cant have the shot, cant use the ring, no go on the patch, no implants.. I have 3 options, the pill, an IUD or having my tubes tied.

My OB told me about Murniva (I think thats what its called) its an IUD.

Anyone have one? Any thoughts on it??

I have the Paraguard, and I love it. It doesn't have horomones, and it can last up to 10 years. It's the copper IUD. It took just a few minutes to put it in while at a check up after DD was born, and I had very little pain associated with the insertion.

I have Mirena and love it. It does have hormones, but I've had no problems or discomfort.

I've heard good things about IUDs, but I've heard the implantation process is painful, esp for those who've had a c-section (like me).

Mirena... thats the one I ordered! It does have hormones in it, but safe ones for breastfeeding.

Its rather expensive.. 500 bucks.. but thankfully its covered by insurance!

I really dont want to have to take a pill every day. I made my appointment for March, I have to wait 10 weeks post delivery, but then my OB will be on leave, shes having a baby... so I guess its pills until March.

Another option, but is permanent like a tubal but likely irreversible, is the tubal implant. Requires no surgery just insertion done in the doctor's office or as an out patient and said to take about 30 minutes. It will take up to 3 months for scar tissue build up to prevent pregnancy.

ETA: I did some more reading and discovered that I was partially misinformed about the fertilized egg not implanting. While this can happen I was unaware that some IUDs actually kill the sperm. I apologize for speaking without total knowledge. It does seem like the best non permanent option for anyone that believes life starts at fertilization and abortion is murder.

I hope it works well for you; I do know what it is like to want to stop at four.

That is interesting. I thought the Minera was not recommended for breast feeding. I do not tolerate hormones well anyway, which is how I ended up with the copper IUD instead. Hmm....maybe it just wasn't recommended for ME!

I make sure I ask and understand how the IUD works... It does not kill the egg or sperm.. it makes your uterus so thin the egg cant attach, but does not kill it.

WOW! I am in the exact same boat. Just had my daughter 9 weeks premature and I am done (#5 between my DH and I.) I can't do the pill...mostly because I forget. I am breastfeeding so options are limited. I have narrowed it down to IUD or DepoProvera shot (My OBGYN said it is approved for breastfeeding and so does all the literature I've read.)

I am thinking the Mirena too...but for those who have an IUD, just how painful is the process??? I only have insurance for 3 more weeks, so I have to think fast here and be well informed.

As I said I didn't have much discomfort at all. I'm sure it varies from person to person, but since it was put in I've had no problems.
Boy, if men had all these things to think about!!!
