Breastfeeding Question

Yesterday there was a parent nursing her baby in the school cafeteria. She was discreet about it, but I didn't (along with several other adults) think sitting in a room during lunch with 5 Kindergarten, 4 4th grade and 4 3rd grade classes was appropriate. Just wondering what ya'all thought.

Noone is bashing breastfeeding-I just wanted the opinions of people here.

As long as she was discret then i would have no problem with it. I myself wouldnt do it in front kids that arent my family but thats another day. Hey at least she was being discret about it and not letting 'everything' hang out. Just my opinion.

I completely respect your opinion. And it doesnt sound like you are bashing breastfeeding at all...just questioning the public aspect of it.

Here is my opinion: Because breastmilk is often an infants only source of nutrition, I believe mothers should feel comfortable to breastfeed anywhere at anytime. I do feel that it should be done discretely so as not to offend others. Many moms breastfeed on demand which is what most experts agree is the best for babies, so that means that when the baby is hungry - they get fed. No matter if they are at the mall or even in a lunchroom filled with other children.
I do not think young children are negatively affected by seeing a mother breastfeed her baby as it is a natural, loving, nurturing thing to do. Unfortunately, many children see breasts in other unnatural ways (on tv, girls walking down the street half dressed, etc). I think it would be good to educate the child if the parent is with them when they see a mom breastfeeding so that they could understand that this is the way many babies are fed milk.

On demand feeding is the common way used in my homeschool group, so everytime we're around them - park days, field trips, classes - some mom is apt to have a child latch on for a feeding. These are moms who aren't trying to be discrete here, just continue their conversation only with a baby nursing.

I've never seen any of the other kids pay it any attention. The only kids that seem to care are other nursing babies who seem to want to eat in groups, perhaps some milk sense LOL

I think it's great for her to do that. Children need to see how babies are fed naturally! Many of these kids don't have a baby in their houses that is breastfed so don't get a chance to see it. As long as she isn't baring anything I think it's great!

I would have been more worried about her having a baby in a germ infested school this time of year.

isn't a lunch room a place to eat ?? where should she have been the Bathroom ?? Because Im sure you would have been ok with the children taking their lunches into the bathroom to eat !!!
