SAD Any Advice for a Poor Gassy Boy???

My poor little boy. He's 7 weeks old today and has had issues with gas for over a month now.

He had started doing a little better it seemed but last night he was SO bad and in pain.

He hasn't taken a nap all day (up at 8:30 a.m.) and just screams and screams on and off - jerking up his little legs in pain. He'll fall asleep for 5 minutes and look like he's sound asleep when all of a sudden he screams himself awake. It's so sad and I don't know what else to do!

We're using Mylicon and he's on Sensitive formula...I've been advised to not change his formula again (we changed it maybe two weeks ago and it seemed to be working) and we're using Dr Brown's special bottles.

My coworker suggested using a tiny drop of dark Karo syrup in his bottle...anyone else heard of that?

Do any of you have any other advise??? If he's not doing better by Monday I may take him to the doctor because it's not just a normal amount of gas. He's literally screaming in pain. :( I feel totally helpless to help him.

When my ds2 was gassy (he was a preemie, in NICU), the nurses would take a heat pack, wrap it in a thin blanket, and place it between them and ds, right above his tummy. That would settle him down. Thankfully he wasn't too gassy, but I sure would have liked that tip with ds1. He was so gassy and colicky, I thought I was going to loose my mind.
Another tip I learned with ds2 from the nurses was infant massage. Repeating the motions several times a day will help release the gas and aids in better digestion. But you have to do it while they aren't crying or fussy...I know, easier said then done! Maybe after a diaper change or after his bath. Start off slow, a few minutes at a time, til baby gets used to the massage. I don't remember the site offhand, but if you google infant massage for gas, I'm sure a few will pop up.

Hugs to you and baby!

yes I have heard of Karo syrup but dont put to much just a few drops..walgreens had these little pills that will melt in his mouth for gas they seemed to help my son better than the Mylicon drops did..

You may also want to add a little extra water to his milk to break it down some for him, thats what helped my son the most took like a day or two to help. Alex had gas so bad he would just cry, the afternoon and night was the worst then about 9 or 10pm he would finally go to sleep. The doctors would not give him anything told me to use the Mylicon drops used so many bottles of the stuff...I would sit and hold him and pat his back or walk and hold him close and bounce him some that seem to help..when you hold him make sure his legs are up under him like he would lay when you first brought him home that tends to make some difference to...

One thing that worked well for us was holding the baby facing out and over your arm...there is this technique I don't really know how to describe it. You gently bounce the baby and hold him over your arm facing away from you. The gas will come out and the baby will be much happier shortly. Let me see if I can google it so you can understand better what I am talking about. :)

For little babies, it is called the football hold. Here is a demo. If he is good at holding his own head, you can just face him out, over your arm. Your arm puts pressure on his abdomen and expels the gas. HTH.

This is what I did with my daughter... It worked great! Being outside was also helpful... i guess the air and birds calmed her?

Good luck! Remember this too shall pass...

We used baby yoga. Just lay him on his back, hold his ankles and press his knees up into his belly. There are different variations like bicycle kicks, windmills, etc. We would do this and my son would pass gas everytime we put his legs up. Worked really well!

PP is right on target with the bicycling. Also will help to place him on his side with his knees up into his belly. And OP, try Hyland's tablets for gas.

I feel your pain. :(

I'm going to get some Karo syrup tomorrow.

We gave him a baby sepository earlier today and he had a BM and then slept for two hour. He's screaming again though. :(

We're trying the football hold thing...hadn't seen that one. We have tried the bicycle movement of his little legs. It seems to calm him, but only for a little bit and only with his milder gas.

When he screams sometimes he acts like he's hungry...but then he'll eat just 1/2 an ounce or an ounce and stop eating. I hate just feeding him bits and pieces and I think it makes his gas worse too.

If he's not better by Monday I'm taking him to the doctor.
