Default WIC: How the program has changed

I just went back on WIC yesterday for my son. I had quit it for a while because it was not worth the hassle we had to go through for so little. I have to say, i am very impressed w/ the new program. Maybe this isn't new to others but new for me here in Nebraska.

Were a family of 4 and here is what we will be getting each month now.
2 Bottles of Juice 64oz.
2 loaves of whole wheat bread
1 jar store brand PB or Beans in bag or 4 cans
3 Gal Milk
1 16oz store brand Cheese
1 Doz med or Large eggs
$6 in Fresh Fruit

I am excited over this new program

Nebraska sounds like Iowa. We just now got $6 on frozen/fresh veggies or fruit... and can use coupons and pay any difference.

So last month our GG Steamers were on sale here for $1.29. I used 10 $.50/1 Qs to make them $.79 each or $7.90 for 10. WIC Check paid $6.00 towards them and I paid $1.90.

A typical WIC month in Iowa:
$6.00 Fresh/frozen fuit or vegetables
3 gallons whole milk
1 quart whole milk
2 loaves whole wheat bread
36oz Cereal
2 64oz Fruit Juice
4 cans Beans
1 Dozen Eggs
16oz Natural Cheese

VERY helpful. We pretty much shop only at Aldi's - it's nice to be able to coupon again when I use the WIC checks

I am in Florida and that sounds a lot like what they will be giving starting in Nov. I always asked myself why not give children fruits and veggies and whole grains? That's a great idea!!

Default Re: WIC: How the program has changed

I am in Ohio and Exclusively breastfeeding. Each I am getting (I think- this is from memory and this is the first month I am getting this package):

- 4 milks
- 2 juices
- 16 oz whole grains (about 1 loaf of bread)
- 30 oz tuna (6 cans)
- 64 oz canned beans (I think like 4 cans)
- 2 lbs cheese
- 36 oz cereal
- 1 jar PB
- $10 fruit/veggie voucher
- 2 cartons of Eggs

Seriously, It helps SO much to get WIC. I know some people who complain about the cereals and all that, but I am so grateful. (Sure, I do like my cocoa crispies, but healthy cereals are good, too). I love all the changes they have made and I am so happy we can use coupons with the fruit and veggie vouchers. That will stretch it so much further.

When i lived in Council Bluffs, IA they would give you checks to use at the Farmers market during the summer. I loved that so much! We would always get corn, watermelon & cucumbers.

When your little one turns 6 months they start giving them fruits and vegetables and meats(baby food in jars/plastic containers) instead of infant juice.
