Default Re: Vaccinating for H1N1?

It DOES seem early for flu shots doesn't it? Hmmm...see, if my boy has any other health issues I'd be more inclined to get him vaccinated for the flu/h1n1. Those kids who have died with the flu had other underlying health issues.

It's just all so much to think about.

DH took DD to her well-check last week, and the ped recommended giving her the regular flu vaccine at that time. DH allowed it because we intended to get her vaccinated this year anyway, but I thought it was awful early for flu vaccines. Several clincs for flu shots were held this week in my town, and I was really surprised. I thought the vaccine was normally given in October to protect through the worst of the flu season.
I was thinking it was a little early as well.

For those that are on the fence whether to vaccinate for h1n1 but normally do reg flu vaccines, have kids at risk, ect... I would suggest at least getting the pneummococal valent 23 booster (not the 7 which is the norm). What kids are dying of is secondary lung infections and the pneummococal valent 23 booster will prevent many of those infections.

This is a list of the pediatric deaths so far in the u.s. it's sobering to read

Surveillance for Pediatric Deaths Associated with 2009 Pandemic Influenza A (H1N1) Virus Infection --- United States, April--August 2009

Also for those that are pregnant...I know someone mentioned it....pregnant women are actually the highest risk for complications/and death from h1n1. They think it is because the baby is pressing on your lungs causing you to have less lung capacity and somehow that is causing pregnant women to be more prone for secondary bacterial infections in there lungs.

For children neuro impared, chronic lung disease, and heart defects are the children most at risk. And 4 of the children got tamiflu within the 48 hours and died anyways.

Her pedi strongly suggested that all people her child comes in contact get it though. What a way to scare a parent! How can she feel at ease wondering if EVERYONE her child comes in contact with has been vaccinated? Her child goes to a day care which is highly suggesting that the children get vaccinated.

OK.... I had the vaccination Last Week.... I had a couple days of feeling a little punk....but I also have a sinus infection. The vaccination did not make grow a third arm... it did not kill me... and if I had kiddoe at home.... they would all be lined up for it...to protect them and others.

Default Re: Vaccinating for H1N1?

I live in NY and the swine flu is about to hit again. I work in hospital and I have seen first hand how quickly this virus spreads. I am not getting the H1N1 shot. I don't trust it. I will get a regular flu shot. The swine flu has taken over the regular flu- the regular flu basicall no longer exists. I wear a N95 Kimberly Clark Mask on the subway, purchased from Amazon.com and people step away from me, because they think that I have it. Duh! Everyone should wear one on the subway or on crowded buses; something the CDC nor the WHO has suggested I truly believe that this would help in the transmission of this virus. I track the numbers and read alot about the Southern Hemisphere and the medical community is concerned, truly concerned. How do you handle over 200 pts. a day coming in with swine flu and swine flu infections that require ICU care and isolatoin. How many hospital have 200 or 300 or 400 ICU/Isolation rooms for those patiients. Are there any hospitals that have this? (Let me Know)

You do not need to be in high traffic areas to catch this virus. Don't be fooled. It has circulated around the globe since April, and now it is about to make anothe go round. The medical community is watching intently for mutation of the viirus, which hopefully will not happen-but they have never seen a virus infect so many so quickly.

So, there is my 2 cents.

I'm glad you did not have any side effects from it. However, your neurological system is fully developed, you probably weigh more than a small child or infant, and some people will have effects from the vaccine that others will not. Some effects may not be seen immediately either.

I respect your choice to get your children the vaccine. I also worry about my son getting the swine flu...what parent wouldnt? But am I willing to take a risk with a rushed vaccine...absolutely not. I pray that I am not wrong-...but I am basing my decision on the in depth research I have done concerning vaccines.

Oh and P.S. Let us know if that third arm grows! I will definitely not get the shot then. (Totally kidding with this!! )

My younger 2 yr old dd is allergic to eggs as well. Her pedi said that although we can't give her the regular or H1N1 flu shots since they are made in chicken embryos, we can still give her the Flu Mist (spray into the nose) form of the vaccine since that doesn't have any egg components in it. It is safe for those 2 years and older. I'm still debating whether she should take it though (both the regular and H1N1)!

Isan't this vaccination basically made the same way the regular flu one is?

Just using a different virus?
