Default Re: Kindergarten-how does it work in your area?

DD just started this week, but her schedule is W, F and every other Mon. THere is another class that goes T, T, every other Mon. Not really sure I like this schedule, but we'll see.

I agree, i think the that type of kindergarten 2-3 a week would be awful, i imagine some parents may get confused and forget the week and bring the child on the wrong day, not to mention those that work and have to find childcare around that schedule.

In our district it is the old 1/2 day 5 days a week schedule. Although we are considering homeschooling(ds just turned 3 so we have a while to decide) and according to kansas law, children are not required to go to school until age 7.

Ours is mon-fri half day am is 9-11:30 and pm is 1-3:30. There is one school in our district that has all day kindergarten but all the parents try to get their kids in that school so it has a very long waiting list. My daughter just went to the am session for kindergarten.

Our district is still half day but it is 5 days a week. DS goes from 8:50 a.m. til 11:30 a.m. I would thing the 2 days one week and 3 the next week would be very confusing. I was hoping our district would go to full day but they don't have the funds to do it.

My district does not provide preschool at all (unless you are low income) and no PreK. I have DS in a church run preschool which costs me $105 per month and that is the cheapest one I was able to find in my area.

I still don't really know how I am going to swing this since I work 3 days a week and DS2 will be starting Preschool next year the same time DS1 starts Kindergarten but I have one year to rack my brain and come up with a solution. If I actually had to pay for day care (MIL watches them now while I work) I may as well quit since it would take up all my take home pay but then I would be in trouble for medical insurance.

We have a lottery preschool that they do 5 half days for (8:30- 11:30 & 12:30- 3:30).

Kindergarten is required they go for 5 full days 8:30-3:30. Both are state funded.

Our kindergarten is every other day full day. That means one week Tuesday, Thursday, and Monday, Wednesday, Friday the next week. However if Friday is a holiday with no school then the days change because it is literally every other day. It sucks. It is hard to keep up with.

Nicole starts 9/10 in half-day every day but until this year, this school district did what yours is doing, the every other day thing. I had never heard of that before and I'm really glad they ditched it. It was supposedly somehow cost saving, but they're in an even tighter budget crunch this year and doing the half days so dunno what the logic really is.

In our case, there's an enrichment program called Champions that will take her in the afternoon for $65 a week (much less than our child care has been). Champions is a nation-wide program and might be where you are and might take up the slack on the off days. Here's a link: https://connect.klcschoolpartnerships.com/

If my child care stays as it is right now the 2-3 days is actually easier for me, but DH just told me last night that MIL may stop watching the kids once DS#1 starts Kindergarten. In that case I may end up having to quit my job, And then we will be in some really financially straining times!

This year at our school, we got to choose 5 full days or 5 half days. In past years they had K club where parents could pay about $100 a month for the kids to stay full days. I would say that about 75% of the parents chose full day. It just makes it easier for riding the bus, child care arrangements, not to mention more learning time. I was surprised some parents would pick half days. I think that the few kids that did half days will be at a disadvantage next year when everyone goes full day to first grade.
