Default Re: Daycare costs

Frankly, I don't think it is going to be an issue of how much to pay, but if you can find someone to take this on. My daycare right now for a 3 year old in a center that bills itself as "affordable childcare" is nearly $1000 a month. This of course varies greatly by location and all, but still. Infants are a lot more. Thankfully, my 5 year old is about to start "big school" and we're finally dropping our day care costs down to no more than our mortgage (they were above the whole last year).

If you can find someone willing to take your child 12 solid hours (most won't go over 10), that's amazing. If you can find someone willing for those 12 hours to end at midnight, that's even MORE amazing. And then the 24 hour? Incredible. And, you're going to need a serious back up for all the times your child is sick.

Maybe ask people that are already on this crazy schedule what they do? Maybe there's a way to piggy back of whomever does it for them?

Good luck!
Tess

OK, having read further your REAL question is what you should CHARGE to do this. I don't think $3 an hour is at all appropriate but if you're willing to take it, then go for it.

I wouldn't do it for less than $50/night if it were me. If she is working her whole 40 hour work week in 2 days, then $100 per week is reasonable/cheap for childcare anyway. I think more like $150-$200 is normal for an infant per week.

Default Re: Daycare costs

so you are saying you would be providing care for 36hrs a week? I live in NY and the rates I charge for my daycare are
AGES Up to 3 hrs 3hrs to 6hrs 6 + hours Part Time Full Full +
6 wks- 1 1/2 yrs $3.25 $21.00 $31.00 $110 $135 $165
1 1/2 - 3 $3.00 $20.00 $31.00 $105 $133 $163
3 to 12 $3.00 $20.00 $30.00 $100 $130 $160

The hourly rates are for people who bring their kids only 1 day a week.
Part time is 0- 29hrs
Full time is 30-40hrs
Full time pus is 41+hours a week

So as compared to many other areas, my rates are pretty cheap, but I live in an area where it doenst cost much to live. So I would be charging this women $110 for those 2 days.

You might want to double check local rates for a week of care and then decide on a fair price.

Around here $100 a week is super cheap. $200 is average. $300+ is common for high end care.

The daycare I used to work at was 185/wk for infants. I also suggest looking at the going rate for a week of child care because that is basically what you are providing, just all the hours in a row.

The people asking you do to this are going to be looking at a premium price anywhere. I used to work as a nanny and I was paid 11/hr, which is pretty average around here for a nanny service.

I did some price checking on Craigslist. Prices went from $20 to $120 for the 12 hr shift and from $30 to $240 for the 24 hour shift.

Gotta tell you that the 20 and 30 SCARED ME. When I was telling the parents about the prices the dad said "that's just, I need my crack money".

We interviewed today and baby girl will start with me in another week. I'm excited. thanks to all for your input and advice.

I'd say $50 for a 12 hour shift and $100-$120 for the 24 would be a fair (albeit low) price.

My kiddos are starting daycare next week - 30 hours/week and it's $1200/month for the 16 month old and $1400/month for the 3 month old. :shrug7:

Holy smokes that is alot of money! Where do you live? You can get a private nanny at your home for that price.

We're in the suburbs of Boston. I know, the cost in centers is ridiculous around here...
