Default Tips for taking away the binkie

Hello! My DD is 2 we are in the midst of potty training right now and I want to also wean her from her binkie..She only takes it at nap/bed time but its like she HAS to have it to go to sleep. There has been times in the car where she has gone to sleep with out it, but thats the car. Today i took her to the sitters and realized I forgot her binkie at home! I feel terrible for forgetting it, for the baby sitters sake! (lol) My dd's first day there she layed her down for a nap and my dd just cried and cried and wouldnt take a nap with out it so she ended up giving it to her to calm her down and we decided we would break her together when the time comes. Since she wont have it at all at the sitters today do u think i should just not give it to her tonight for bed either depending on how it goes at the sitters today? Ive also heard to cut the tips off of them. If any one has had any experiences with this or has any tips I would appreciate it! Thanks!

Both my boys just decided one day that they didn't want it anymore (at around 3m & 6m) so I don't have any first hand experience. But I have heard people getting thier little ones to give their binkies to new babies that are going to need them. Or tieing them to a baloon so the stork can pick them up.

I have also heard the cutting the tip on thing. I would be careful with trying to break of the binkie and potty training simultaniously. Too much change at once can lead to big melt downs and regression.

Default Re: Tips for taking away the binkie

With my SD, DH said that she took it out and threw it on the floor. The dog picked it up and chewed it up. After that, there was no more paci... all gone, dog ate it.

My neice threw hers in the fireplace. All gone. They had to rush and find and destroy the rest of them that were around the house. Months later, my nephew found one under the bed, "Look, Evie! I found your paci!". Next thing you know, Evie has the paci in her mouth. My SIL pulled it from her mouth and said, "No, it's dirty" Nephew tells her to go wash it. SIL runs to the kitchen, Evie steady following. She cuts the nipple part off, and shows Evie that it's broken.

DS never got hooked on the paci, thank goodness. My friend is practically forcing her newborn to take one, because she'd rather have him suck a paci, than his thumb. Because "you can take a paci away, you can't take his thumb away." FTR, my DS sucked his thumb until he was oh, two weeks old. I've decided to not have pacifiers in the house with this baby at all. *shrug*

I'm sorry I don't have better advice. And I was NOT critisizing you for giving DD a binkie. (Friend, friends SIL, and I got into a heated discussion at the hospital over binkies) I'm not trying to start trouble or anything. :)

My son was 2.5 when he gave up his "paci". He was in daycare and they would not let him have it during naps, so he was only having it at night to go to sleep. It really was his comfort object because he had three of them - one for each hand and one in his mouth.

Our daycare was divided into sections. One day I took him to see the babies through the window. We talked about the babies and their pacis and bottles. That night I told him the next day we were going to give his "pacis" to the babies at "school". I then let him go to sleep. He went to daycare the next day and I hid his pacifiers at home. That night when he asked for his "pacis", I reminded him that we gave them to the babies at school. He tossed and turned a little and asked a couple of times for them in the night but we were able to make it through the night. The next night, he asked for them again and I reminded him they were at school with the babies. He never said anything else about them again.

My son has always been pretty easy to reason with, even at 2. My daughter, on the other hand, does not take a pacifier but has a blankie that I feel we will have a hard time getting rid of!

This is what im afraid of!! But maybe if all goes well at the sitters today and she takes a nap with out it or something I can try tonight with out one...see how it goes...i have also heard of the binikie fairy type method..and the fairy leaves a little present behind in exchange for the binkie.

My son never really took to the binkie. He had one, but just chewed on it. Around 9 or 10 mos he decided the binkie wasn't his thing and he has a blankie that he HAS to have. He is almost 2 and we have 3 of the same blankie. It is his security item and he chews it as he falls asleep and when he is getting tired.

We took DD3 to Build a Bear and let her put her "bobbi" in the animal of her choice. She was completely fine (mommy cried like a baby)... then she knew that she could always have her bobbi with her.

She cried the first night and never since.

This is what I did and it worked great. It takes about 7 to 10 days but it works. Keep the Binkie out of site and do not offer it to her. If she ask for it then give it to her. Do this for about 3 = 7 days. You will realize how often you offer her, her Binkie with out her really even wanting it. Once you have this down then just take it away at nap time, then in a couple of days take it away at bed time. It may be rough the first couple of nights with out the Binkie, just reaaure her several times a night untill she goes to sleep, but it won't take long and your are done!

Good Luck
Shelly

I would choose either potty training or binky training to do...but only one at a time...both is just too much.
