I have breastfed my babies in public many times when necessary, and i have to say that i don't feel like I have lost any dignity in doing so. Just because you were uncomfortable doing it, doesn't mean everyone should be. I was uncomfortable breastfeeding in public the first few times, but because it wasn't always possible for me to avoid it, I comforted myself with the knowledge that I was doing what was best for my babies. And, as I did it more often, I got more comfortable with it.
