Default My poor little baby's bottom

We are visiting my mom this week and we all had tacos, refried beans, and rice last night for dinner. My 19 mon old son as of this morning has a pretty bad diaper rash. He rarely ever gets a red bottom, but this one is sore to him, red, and has little bumps. He has had tacos before, but the refried beans apparantely had green chiles in them. Do you think that could have caused this? I have been lathering him in A&D....anybody think any other types of cream are better?
I hope his little butt gets better soon.

We used Dyprotex when the kids were little--I'm not sure if they even still make it. It came in little tubs with a sponge-like applicator. It was really good stuff. We didn't use A&D because my son was sensitive to lanolin. I'm sorry your little boy has that--I hated it when my kids got diaper rash.

It's been a few years since I doctored a diaper rash but I used to first apply a thin layer of Maalox (neutralizes the acids that might come in contact with the rash area) and then coat generously with Desitin. Hope your little one is better soon!

The things i used for severe rash was Lotrimin - a thin layer is all that is needed. It is an anti-fungal and was recommended by my pediatrician as he says a lot fo rashes are promoted by fungus. I know, not a pleasant thought - but I was amazed at how it worked on diarrhea caused rashes.

We used the Lotrimin a lot too--I forgot about that. Especially if the kids were on antibiotics and had diarrhea.

Pinxav is the only thing that worked for our daughter and it cleared up in literally hours whenever we applied it! I usually was able to find this at Walgreens, behind the pharmacy counter. It's not a prescription medication but it's always found behing the pharmacy counter for some reason.

Diaper Rash Cream and ointment for babies. Pinxav. Pink salve.

I use corona Ointment. You can get it in the pharmacy at walgreens. It is the best!! I have tried everything and this works the best. I have also used the maloxx to coat the rash just make sure you get the non flavored kind.

In a situation like that, I would usually wash their little bums with baking soda water mixture (neutralized acid, etc.), and let them air dry & be naked as much as possible.

I think I tried every butt cream out there, and the only one that worked for my family was Burt's Bees. It's very thick and creates a super barrier, and always got rid of the redness & bumps.

When I was at the pediatrician on Tuesday he said that the Lotrimin isn't working as well as it used to (the fungus has gotten immune to it) and that they are now recommending Tinactin for the rashes that won't clear up.

If you have the ability to contact your doctor, it's advisable to ask them to either give you a sample or, or write you a prescription for Dimethicone. It is the best thing I have ever run into. When Schwoom was in the hospital for nearly 2 weeks with Rotavirus (does not usually require being in the hospital, but in his case, it did) they gave us tube after tube of it to keep him from getting a rash with his constant 'runs'.

If you can't get it, then a diaper ointment that contains it is the next best thing.
What we usually do, is take a&d ointment, and rub a layer of it AROUND the affected area, and then take the dimethicone or other ointment and put a thin layer OVER the affected area.
The medication ON the area will help to clear it up, while the a&d will keep the rash from spreading.

Finally, another thing you should do, if possible...
Pick up a package of the pads that people use when caring for the elderly. They are used underneath an invalid, to help keep the bed dry. Usually one side is a plastic, and the other side can collect fluids. I can't remember the name...
Anyway, if you don't have this, then a thick towel or something would do.

That said, I'd make that little baby naked, and lay him on his stomach in front of the tv (to keep him busy) and let his butt air dry. You should give him as much "air time" as possible, so he can get dry. Air is one of the best things you can do, as "infections" breed in dark/wet spaces.
you'll want to clean him first, making sure that there is no ointment or urine on him, so you're starting from scratch.
Then, once you are ready to put his diaper on, then you can do the medicine fix as I mentioned above.
If you don't see some sort of relief within 5 or so days, I'd call you're child's doctor and schedule an appointment, just to make sure that there isn't something else going on.

Good luck!!
