I have a friend whose baby has a milk allergy, and she does have to avoid the caramel color or her baby is affected. That's why I mentioned it.

I wasn't 2nd guessing you.... allergies are crazy and all types of people break out to different things.

We've just not yet come across anything that has caramel coloring that has dairy in it or that affects him(thankfully b/c that stuff is in a lot!!). I've read that some people break out with caramel coloring, I often wonder if they are allergic to additives also??

I can't believe yalls pedis testing for allergies so young. I ask my pedi about it because we think that DS has a dairy allergy and she said it’s not necessary. I am a BFing mom and had to quit all dairy for him. He was one and a half months when I quit and is now almost 1 year old. I am terrified to give him soy even though he has had things with soy lechtin. I would love an allergy test to feel better about the dairy issue. I will be slowly adding dairy back into my diet to see how he does. I am just so terrified of him having a severe allergy. When he was a month old he had some formula and we ended up in the NICU because he reacted so badly. He has diarrhea and threw up and ended up severely dehydrated. All from formula. He has before that had horrible stomach pain/ problems. I quit dairy and he was a completely different baby. If yall ever need to talk I am always up for it. It’s nice to speak with other parents going through the same things!

Hi! I also have a milk and soy allergic son (he also has other food allergies) - he was actually so sensitive that the Alimentum/Nutramigen didn't cut it and he had to use Neocate (amino acid based.) We use Rice Dream brand rice milk mixed with coconut milk (6 oz rice, 2 oz coconut.) It's the closest we can get to whole milk without using Neocate One+ which he won't drink.

He eats fruits, veggies, meats, and some special cookies made by Enjoy Life foods. Check them out!

Our pedi wasn't interesting in testing.... I was b/c I knew something was wrong. I called an allergist office and asked if they test at a young age (8 months) and sure enough they did. So that's how we got started. We've been seeing that allergist for over a year now.

We just saw him yesterday for a peanut challenge test, and my 23 month old passed it. For now, he's no longer allergic to peanuts!!! Woot Woot. Still horribly allergic to milk though:sad:

Ewwww... Neocate. My DD couldn't even handle THAT. Not to mention it smelled SOOOO bad! LOL.
Have you ever tried ELecare? DD was on that until about a year ago. Much much better. Its more expensive than the neocate though...
roughly $48 a can (when she was on it)

OP---

We tried the Elecare but DS had some funky rashes on it (we arent sure it was the Elecare, but it did resolve once he got onton the Neocate.) I'm not sure where you're located, but here (Boston) Neocate runs $50/can - THANK GOD Blue Cross covered it or we'd be in the poor house! And your right - the stench is awful...especially when a bottle rolls into your trunk unbenounced to you in the middle of a summer heat wave. Ewwww

WOW! I honestly couldn't remember how much the neocate was... DD was only on it for a few weeks... at that time she ate so little that we prob only ever had to buy 1 can!

Your lucky your in MASS. I am pretty sure it is state law they have to cover the prescription formulas. Here in GA, NOPE. You are at the mercy of the insurer. We had to file tons of APPEALS to get the elecare covered!

Yikes - thankfully it is the law here for the insurer to cover the rx formulas. I can't imagine having to fight the insurance company while taking care of a kid with serious health issues. You never think your kiddo is going to have a $1200 a month formula habit when you're planning for the baby expenses!
