Default Question about baby sling/carrier

Okay, so I definitely want a baby sling or carrier of some sort, but will I have to look out for the size of the baby sling/carrier? I'm not a skinny woman (about a women's size 20), and I don't know anything about slings or carriers, so I don't know if they even make big ones or not. Also, my husband is really big (6'3'', 300+ lbs), and I don't know if they make baby carriers that big.

So, I guess basically my question is, do they make baby carriers and slings with adjustable straps for bigger people?

Thanks!!

I had bought a mei tai (spelling??) and it is 100% adjustable. I ordered mine from a WAHM (handmade, to order) and she offered longer straps for a fee, as well as padded straps.

however, I never really used the carrier becuase my DD's legs were too short to work with it(to get to stick out the sides) It worked well when she was really young and I could have her legs folded inside, but then she got too wiggly for that... so maybe not the best option :(

I have this carrier and its been ok with DD. I used it with DS all the time until he was about 6 months old. Cleaning house and doing laundry was about impossible without it! I was about a size 18, and I wore it fine. My sister who is similar in size has worn it at times, and there is still room to adjust it bigger. Not a wrap, but it worked for us.

Oh okay, that's the one I registered for. I was just worried that I'd have to buy a "plus-size" baby carrier.

My sister's friend makes slings (more like fabric you can tie all sorts of ways) to order from every fabric imaginable. I bet you could Google up some directions. I know its a simple matter of cutting and sewing the raw edges, nothing fancy (my sister likes to brag about making her own).

I think every one in my family has worn ours at some point, and we range from my petite mom to my sister and I (plus sized) to my DH and my dad who are both broad shouldered. No one has complained about it being uncomfortable, and we've used it at local festivals, at the park, around the house, on vacation, and just about everywhere in between. I liked that the baby could face either way as they grew. Both DD and DS routinely fell asleep in it, so it must be comfortable for them too.

oOh, this subject is my specialty! A large ring sling would work, so would a mei tai with longer straps (I like them super long to tie different ways). A Moby wrap would work well too :) If I had to chose one I would go with a mei tai with 80-85 inch straps

I have a wrap that's adjustable so that DH can use it, and that's ok... But I prefer our sling just because it's easy, especially when we're out...just slip it over your head, rather than having to wrap yourself up. And I believe lots of them come in ranges of sizes.

And on a different but related note JCPenney.com has lots of great plus sized maternity stuff that is not the super high price of most maternity wear. Easy to order, quick to ship, easy return if it doesn't fit. Especially if you need stuff you can wear to work! They saved me when I was pregnant!

I would avoid Baby Bjorn type carriers. They are not good for baby at all. The pressure they put on the sacral (sp?) nerve can be painful or damaging. I'd stick with a sling or Mei Tai or something like that. I was looking at one called a Duo something or other; saw it on Hyena Cart. I'll look into the exact name of it when I am at home on our computer (at the MILs right now). It is a neat concept and looks pretty awesome. She even makes one out of the solar veil material for the pool!
There is a website called the baby wearer that has a ton of resources on the subject and the folks there may be able to help you find the perfect carrier/sling for you and your husband and baby. I found my love for the Hot Sling and Peanut Shell there, my friend loves the Mei Tai that she read up on and got opinions on there.
