Default Re: Question about baby sling/carrier

I LOVE my Ergo baby/toddler carrier - it is good from birth (with the insert - after about 3 mo you don't need the insert) up to 35 lbs! I've carried my 3 kids around (one at a time of course :) )all day and it's so comfortable you forget it's even there - you can also get an extra strap for people with a waist larger than 40 inches. It's also healthier for the baby as they sit in a more natural position - the web site is ERGObaby - baby carrier - back pack - sling for info

Ergo's are not necessarily good for large people. My Dh and I are at the largest end of the spectrum on use of an Ergo. He's broad shouldered and is about 6'1 and the thing barely fits him. I am a 36 DD size 12-14 and it barely fits me. I guess if she had the extra strap as you were saying it would be ok. I wish that they would make a large size one for larger people. They do work awesome though, I just wish they could make different sizes.

I have to say I so love my Ergo, I also have a wonderful pouch sling. This baby I am planning on getting a Moby wrap and a ring sling. I'm a total baby wearing mama, but I hate those front pack baby-Bjorn or Snugli type things, not only do they hurt the baby's back, they killed my back. I am not using that thing again.

Your local upholstery shop or even a seamstress could whip this out for you. I like the idea of finding a pattern or even a good picture and have them go off of that.
I'll be dogsitting the chihuahua again soon so I plan to get a sling of sorts made so I can cart the little one around with me. Good luck to you.

Default Re: Question about baby sling/carrier

I used a ring sling with both my sons and LOVED it. I would have been totally lost without it. And I tried all different types. I couldn't get comfortable with the Baby Bjorn style carriers (I think because I have a bigger chest and the baby seemed to sit to low) and the wraps were too complicated. With the ring sling I could get it on and off easily, change babies position around (sitting up, lying down when they dozed off, forward facing, inward facing). I was even able to nurse them in it while I was at the mall, a restaraunt, wherever. They can be made in any length to accomodate the size of the person but my husband and I both were able to wear the same sling (I am 5'5 150 lbs and he is 6'2 270 lbs). I made my own with directions I found at www.sleepingbaby.net She has directions for making all kinds of baby carriers and lots of information. I loved this so much that I have started making them as baby gifts for friends and family and they are always a big hit.

Are ring slings really secure? I know it's silly, but I'm worried that slings like that won't hold the baby, or will drop her if I don't have a hand over her. I've seen them, but I guess I'm not sure how they can hold a baby without dropping her, lol.

I carry my baby in a ring sling nearly every day. Of course they are secure.

They are secure! Just make sure that you get one that has quality materials (fabric and rings specifically made for slings) and workmanship. Read up on proper positioning and you are good to go! I like to use a wrap tied with a sailor's slip knot tied as a sling (called a Rebozo). You can see it demonstrated here: YouTube - Slipknot with a short wrap . I use a 2.5 meter wrap and just keep the knot tied between uses

I'm sure they are, I just like the reassurance. :smile77:

I would not get a snugli or bjorn, they only work till the baby is about 15 pounds, they are pretty worthless, you can always get one at a yard sale for two dollars if you want one.

I personally highly, highly recommends a beco the go from birth to I think 45 pounds and are so comfortable. I think you can get the with longer straps but both of our 4th generation and butterfly II fit my 225 pounds very short wide hubby fine. That said I did prefer a mei tai when the baby was little till about three months or so.
