In my experience if you are really serious about potty training you need to put them in old fashioned training pants or even regular underwear so that they learn the consequences of peeing their pants. In fact, I prefer to start potty training with the kid naked from the waist down for several days. It is much easier for them to make it in time if they don't have to deal with clothes.

OTOH, pull-ups are great for nighttime. It might make me a bad parent, but I refuse to wake my children up in the night so they can go to the bathroom. I would rather just keep them in pull-ups a few more months until they can stay dry all night by themselves.

I got all excited about seeing this deal coming up that had slipped my mind. I have been told the same thing before, and I can see the validity of it.... I will probably still buy a few packs but not nearly as many as if you hadnt brought this back to my attention thank all of you again for helping me.... my daughter has actually never been one to wet herself in her sleep, since she was born I noticed she always wakes up dry... :shrug7:

In the very beginning, we used as many as regular diapers until he started to firgure it out. Now, we use one, maybe two, during the day and one through the night. We sometimes put Nick in big boy underwear if we know we are going to be home all day. We are really trying to get this potty training wrapped up because I am expecting baby #3 in May and it would sure be nice not to have three in diapers/pull ups.

Purchase some good quality, thick cloth training pants. You can find some nice ones at the ec store online and also on some cloth diaper websites. Sometimes you can find discount coupon codes for diaper websites on diaperpin.com. I'd just buy them as you find good prices. My 17 month old decided she doesn't want to wear diapers (even the pull up kind) so I just put her in cloth training pants. I am so glad I didn't stockpile disposables! The cheap Gerber trainers are not good for preventing puddles so it's worth spending $13-15 for nice ones. I like Imse Vimse trainers, wash them in the right detergent (like Biokleen) and they fluff up and absorb a lot. I actually would have started using them instead of diapers at home from 12 months if I knew such nice training pants existed.

I purchased a box of pull-up and my DD never had to use them. They say not to start potty training until they make it through the night without peeing anyways. So we used zero.

We are having success with underwear. I still put her in a prefold or a bumGenius at night, the second one is a one size cloth diaper that velcros on, so she can take it off to potty in the morning. She stays mostly dry at night, but has an awful cough, so I know she leaks a little and I don't want to be up at 2 am for that!
Pullups and such a good for long road trips. Those times when it is raining and gross and you hear- I have to go potty 35 miles from the next rest area. Other than that, they are just a clever way to keep you spending money on garbage!

Huh? My ds is 5, he's been potty trained for over 2 years, but he still wears pull ups to bed. He's just starting to wake up when he has to go, but not every night.

Wanted to add that I agree with everyone who said they won't learn until you put them in underware. Pullups are nice at night/nap or as diapers before you start training, but are usless for potty training.
