Re: Sensory Integration Dysfunction My 6 year old son has autism and some SPD. We started him in occupational therapy 2 years ago and it has been great. He had some tactile issues-he wouldn't touch things that felt weird or messy. I was never able to get him to play with playdough with me or anything. Today he will ask to do playdough :) There are a lot of different ways this can look, and you'll learn as you go along. A good therapist is worth its weight in gold. A book I like is called "The Out of Sync Child" and "The Out of Sync Child Has Fun".
There are some interesting things that help...like to calm my son and help him focus, heavy lifting helps...basically what it sounds like, having him carry a heavy box or ball or something for a little bit (make it fun) helps him. I think it's a little harder with a child with speech or communication delays, because some behaviors that just seem like tantrums or bad behavior are often a result of SPD. Reading some good books will definitely help you look at those with a different perspective.
Mostly, be patient with him and yourself as you learn what he needs. Good luck! |
