I've had GD twice and would always have 45 carbs at breakfast. No fruit, no juice. I'd usually have some kind of whole grain bread (toast, english muffin), butter, an egg or a slice of cheese, and a cup of skim milk. Never had an issue with high sugars after breakfast, of course, things do affect each person differently.

Be careful of breakfast meats (bacon, sausage) as they can have some hidden sugars in them.

Wanted to add too that Natural Peanut Butter does NOT have sugar in it. I ate a lot of this while pregnant. It made for an excellent protein.

And, it is very important to have your carbs and proteins at breakfast to help stabilize the sugar. Don't just eat cereal, or yogurt or such alone.

I did a glucose screening at my first prenatal visit BUT, after I drank that crap and they drew 80 things of blood, they forgot to run that test!! Isn't that nuts?? I'm supposed to go back and do it again, but I don't want to, lol. I HAVE, however, been getting urine screenings at every appointment to check for protein and sugar.
I have to admit that I didn't do extensive research, but with my most recent pregnancy (2004-2005) my midwife did not encourage it and actually actively discouraged it. I have had no history of GD or diabeties in general.

No, it's NOT true that they'll catch it just by screening your urine. That will catch it only if your blood sugar is astronomically high. Not the average person.

My last pg I passed the 1 hr but had a 10 lb 14 oz baby. This pg (I'm 34 wks) I failed the 1 hr & 3 hr & do have GD. I'm SURE I had it last time, too, but probably developed it after the test. But my urine tests were always absolutely fine.

I have heard of people who eat a specific meal (80 carbs I think) instead of taking the glucose drirnk. You can research it & talk to your dr. about it. Or, just skip the glucose test and test your blood sugars 4x per day (1st thing in AM, fasting, and 2 hrs after each meal). Log the #'s and what/when you ate, and discuss with the Dr.
The problem with doing this is that without a medical diagnosis, insurance won't pay for the strips. 100 of the strips I am using (lasts 25 days) would be $110 without insurance.

Good luck!
