Default Best breast pump?

Can anyone recommend a really good pump? When DS nursed I had an Avent manual (I'm a SAHM and only wanted to pump so DH could feed him once in a while) and it was a total nightmare. Unfortunately, DS had start on an rx formula because of multiple food protein allergies, but I REALLY want to be better prepared to make BF'ing work for this baby. I'll be going back to college in the fall when the baby is about 4-5 months old so the pump will get a lot of use then.

Which did you like? Was it fast, easy, reliable for the long term, etc? Thanks!

I got a Medela PIS Advance this time around. I didn't produce well for the manual.

I saved about $30 over BRU by buying it from the lactation department at the hospital.

I also used a Medela Pump in Style. Used it for three babies (got lots of use with the first as I was still working then) and it is still going strong. I would recommend it highly.

I am going to add a vote for the pump in style. I was planning on going back to work and did a lot of research and found that it was the best... I felt it was worth the money because I thought I was going to use it a lot. I ended up being a SAHM. I have used it here and there and it has been wonderful. I just wish I would have been able to use it more to justify the money spent. It is so easy and painless to use, and it sounds like you will be using it quite a bit... I would also recommened buying it from the hospital because it saved me money there... can't remember how much. GOOD LUCK!

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll definitely look into the Medela and the Ameda. And thanks for the tip on buying from the hospital, I never would have even thought to look there.

Just one more question...did the electric pumps yield more milk per session? And were they quicker? The manual I had took forever...I'd be sitting there for 45 minutes trying to squeek out enough for a 4oz bottle - drove me nuts lol

Definitely much quicker and easier to use an electric vs a manual.

I had a Medela Double Ease, it is advertised as an for occasional pumping. I used it alot and it did great. It lasted through 3 kids just fine.
It was quite a bit cheaper than the Pump in Style, if I had had the money went I got my pump I would have gotten the PIS, but the Double Ease worked just great.

I have the PIS and use it most days of the week working. I can tell you to check into your insurance, as many insurance companies will pay for them with a prescription from your OB. You might have to borrow the one from the hospital for a month...but that will save you tons over buying one!

this is exactly what i did. i got the medela pump in style advanced and had insurance pay for it. they actually needed a script from my PCP vs. my OB though. i did rent from the hospital for those 6 wks while i waited for insurance.

i would look at the new medela freestyle though - i've heard excellent things about them and if i could justify spending $350 then i would (insurance will only pay for one breast pump in a 5 yr span).

but to answer your question on speed, i was able to pump both sides at once and was done in about 20 minutes. usually resulting in 4 oz from each side. i did this for about 6 mon once i went back to work.

good luck!!!

Medela pump in style. I got lucky because my aunt was the manager of a Mootherhood Maternity store so I got to use her discount to buy it and paid like $280 for mine. Best investment ever though!
