| | Re: Breastfeeding Information & Resources Fellow breast-feeder myself! I love it and wouldn't change it for the world. Ds self-weaned at 18 months, and I'll let dd (6 mo. the 27th) nurse as long as she wants also. I wish that everyone would at least try to breast-feed. I can't understand why my SIL (who has one dd and another on the way) thinks it's easier to get up in the middle of the night, stumble down the stairs, mix formula, and heat it up, all while listening to a crying baby, than to roll over, latch baby on, go back to sleep. I'm trying to talk her into trying to nurse, but I don't think she will. *sigh*
BTW, another website I love is: http://www.askdrsears.com/
Some great breast-feeding info, as well other valuable knowledge. |

| | Re: Breastfeeding Information & Resources I have not read through all these posts so I am not sure if this has been covered or not. But, my sister worked with the Lactation Consultants/midwives/Dr and said that in the state of Wisconsin if you are on State Insurance (BadgerCare?) you are eligible for one FREE double breast pump - just ask your healthcare provider at one of your appointments. She said it is a really nice one that comes in a cool case. Just thought I would mention it, not sure if other states do this or not. |

| | Re: Breastfeeding Information & Resources Oh, we were discussing at LLL how much money breastfeeding saves! Not just because you don't have to pay for formula and bottles and all of that, but the money saved on less doctor's visits, less medicines/prescriptions, etc.
Another money saving tip- If you need to pump short-term (such as for a NICU baby) check and see if there is a local store that *rents* electric breast pumps. Soooo much cheaper than buying if you won't be using it very long! When my second was in the NICU (2 weeks, couldn't nurse till day 11) I rented a pump from Meijer. Since I only used it for 2 weeks, I ended up getting back most of the money I had to pay up front (IIRC, they have you pay for 3 months rental and then refund if you bring it back before hand).
Also, you can check your local hospital. Dd2 was 45 minutes away, and I left the pump attachments at the NICU! I didn't realize until it was time to pump and I was so engorged I was in tears. Dh called up our local hospital, and with my insurance, they got me an Avent Isis for FREE! It got me through the night and I still have it :D |

| | Re: Breastfeeding Information & Resources I have Matthew in my lap nursing right now! :) So please excuse any typos.
We adopted our eldest son and he came home at 6 months so I didn't even try to induce lactation. In retrospect I wish I'd have given it a try, but Xander's adoption was very touch and go from one day to the next and it was too emotionally difficult to really think about inducing a milk supply for a baby that it literally took a miracle to get home.
When I got pregnant (Which I had been told would never happen) I knew I would breastfeed. Matthew was born with a tongue tie which we had surgically corrected at 10 weeks and I cannot tell you the difference it has made! A typical nursing session before the clipping was easily 1 to 1.5 hours long, now we're more like 30-40 minutes for a hard-core nursing, and often as short as 20 min. I am so grateful to my local LLL for the support I've gotten along the way. I don't know if the Lord will ever allow another pregnancy for me, but whether our next child comes to us biologically or through adoption I am planning to breastfeed him or her. Having both bottle fed and nursed, I can tell you that nursing is hands-down easier, less of a hassle, less time consuming (once we fixed the tongue tie), requires no equipment other than what the good Lord gave me, is eco-friendly, is economical, helps me maintain my weight, promotes superior attachment, and above all is by far nutritionally superior! |

Interesting information on why you should delay the introduction of solids until at least 6 months.
