Default Kidney blockage found on ultrasound?

Hi! I am 23 weeks prego and had a ultrasound done to check the heart ( first born- hlhs). The heart was fine, but the doc found a blockage in one of the kidneys. I guess I was a little shocked so I did not ask any questions. All we know is we go back right before christmas to check on it and hopefully it will fix its self. Can anyone give any advise on this. I tried to search on the internet, but I don't even know the name of the diagnosis. If you can help, that would be great.

blakehlhs,
I think you are talking about hydronyphrosis (which basically means a blockage) in one kidney and reflux in the other. When I was pregnant with DS (18 mo.), they found that he had hydronyphrosis at my 21week ultrasound. Basically I had to go back for another ultrasound 4-6 weeks later and it had cleared up on its own. After I gave birth, he was on antibiotics for 4 weeks and we had to take him for an ultrasound and another kidney test (the name fails me) at Children's Hospital just to be sure. Both tests turned out to be clear so the problem worked itself out in the womb.
All that being said, I completely understand your fear and concerns! Please dont worry too much though. I remember my OB telling me that 90% of the cases fix themselves. Keep us UTD and if you need to talk further please PM me!
I'll say a little prayer for you and your little one!

My son had this as well - it was discovered on an ultrasound the day before I was induced. He had an ultrasound a few days after birth, and we were refererred to a kidney specialist at Childrens Hospital. They did ultrasounds there a 1 month old, and the specialist thought he had reflux and not a blockage. They continued to monitor it, he had it on both kidneys, although his right was worse then his left. We did followup appointments at 6 months, 1 year and 2 years. At his 1 year, the left had cleared up, and by 2 year they were both clear. We don't have to go back again ulness he would develop a urinary tract infection...a sign that the reflux is back.

My son had this and I've been told that this is a very common thing because the kidneys aren't totally working yet and they are already processing some fluids. It usually works itself out before they are born but they like to keep and eye on it just in case.

Just wanted to send you some hugs! I never had this with my kids (but I was very high risk...23 ultrasounds with my last son!) but I know other women in the perinatologists office that did and all of them I spoke to their's cleared up on it's own. It's always so scary to hear that something may be wrong...especially when you've had a problem before...but try not to worry too much. The odds are in your favor that baby will be just fine :o)

I just have to say how awesome this whole sight is. I of course like saving money, but I love the family section. Everyone is always so nice and helpful! Thanks to everyone who posted. You will not believe how much this has helped my husband and I "chill" out a little. Thanks again and I will be in touch!

My son has Prune belly syndrome. He had a bladder outlet obstruction. If it is this we have a website and there are others with this syndrome but I do pray it is nothing with you as well as it has been with some of these other moms.

It is actually very common with baby boys, my OB told me. With ds#1, I of course freaked out too, and was very worried too. I was sent to the perinatologist to watch over things. By the time of delivery, all was well. When I was pregnant with ds#2, he too had the blocked kidney, but I didn't worry at all the second time. I chose to not go to the peri with him, as I wasn't as worried. Again, all turned out well with him. Honestly, I would have rathered that they didn't tell me that info, and let me just be oblivious kwim? All that worrying for nothing.

In any case, OP, it is very common and USUALLY works out on its own before the baby is even born. I do wish you well though!
