Default Re: Kidney blockage found on ultrasound?

Hello everyone, we just got home from our secound ultrasound and we did not get as much good news as we had hoped for. the problem actually got worse and the doc is having me deliver at the childrens hospital and I will deliver at 37 weeks. The baby will have surgery probaly 24 hours after birth to put a stent (sp?) in. I am very upset, but just trying to be positive.
My first son was born with hlhs and spent the first 5 months of life in the hospital and lost his battle at 17 months. Obviously this case is way different and less extreme, but it is hard to hear about anything at all being wrong with your little one.
My dh and I appreciate all the thoughts and prayers!

Do they think your child had Prune belly syndrome.
My son has it it is a blockage that prevents urine to pass inutero.
My son had a shunt while i was pregnant and he had a vesicostmy surgery at 7 days old.
You might see if this is an option they sew the bladder to the skin and it is a very small hole to where the bladder can empty and not cause further damage to the kidneys.
He only had it 2 years we were able to strech out the urethera and now everything down there is fine he does have kidney damage but it is not too bad. He is very normal now.
If it is prunebelly syndrome there is a website Prunebellysyndromenetwork.org.

Our doc never gave us that term. What I do know is that the kidney on the left side is enlarged greatly and misshaped because it has backed up with fluid. She thinks that there is a blockage that is not allowing urine to pass. I guess we wait and see until he is born and more tests are ran. Thanks and I will be checking out that website to see if any of it sounds the same.

just signed up today and saw your anouncement. My son was born with a restricted kidney. thay found it with my first ultrasound. He is 18 now and all teenage. when he was two months old we went to Rielly Childrens Hoapital were the doctor made the uriter tube going into the kidney larger. The doctor came across like it was no big deal he did these kind of surgeries about 3 times a week. we never have had any problems except one summer he was having pain in his side. the doctor said he was over hydrating and the tube was slitly restricted from the repair to the bladder now but as long as he did not over hydrate there was no need to put a stint in.

I think the term for the obstruction is luto
Which stands for lower urinary tract obstruction. Their is also a website for that as well. I can't remember what it is exactly right now.I have not been on there for awhile now.
My son's problem was his urethera was to narrow we had a shunt place inutero and after he was 6 months old we started streaching his urethera with cathaders. He is now normal size down there.
I hope they find out where the obstruction is and can fix it.
Yes after he is born they will make the diagnosis. There are a few conditions that can cause this blockage.
If it is only one kidney that is good news.
You are in our prayers.

You know what i gave the wrong web address earlier.
The web site is prunebelly.org
Prunebelly syndrome network is our name sorry it's in my tool bar and i don't type it in.
Anyway If you check it out we have a symptom model that states the problems with most people with pbs.

Just saw this thread and had to respond. We had this with my now 5 year old. We caught it by accident since I was only having an extra U/S because of my blood pressure (it didn't show at all on the regular one around 20 weeks). Hers was causing the kidney to be quite enlarged (so much so that my OB called back to check that the decimal they gave her was in the right place)! We ended up having a c-section 3 1/2 weeks early. They put her on daily antibiotics starting the first day to reduce the number of UTI's. They then did a number of U/S directly on her and ultimately some more complex tests to measure how the fluid was or wasn't flowing.

As people have said, this is fairly common now that the technology exists to find it in-utero. Even a year or two before Nicole, the doctor said they would not have seen it. We wouldn't have known about it until she had a lot of UTI's or it could even have been hidden until adulthood when we'd find out the hard way that the kidney had died off years before and there was now some problem with the "good" kidney. The kidney is an amazing organ. You can actually live really well on even 1/4 of 1 kidney and you get 2 to start with!

Most of the time they just watch it and see if it will resolve. They will probably go with the antibiotics to prevent more serious infection. In Nicole's case it was quite severe so we had surgery on it when she was 4 months old. She (and we) were in the hospital for 5 days and she hasn't had a UTI since. No more daily antibiotics, no problems. We go back for yearly check ups and this year were told she doesn't have to come back until she's 10. So, again, Nicole's case was severe (I'm the only one my OB has had to date that actually had to go so far as surgery), but even if that's what happens, they can fix it. It is still never going to be quite the normal kidney shape, but it is working just fine now.

Hope this helps a bit! If you need the name of a GREAT pediatric urologist in the Bay Area, let me know! We think he walks on water!

Tess
