Default Re: Advice Needed. How many diapers and what size should I buy?

I think this is a really tough question. It depends so much on the build of your child, and when the child potty trains.

For example, my sister and I have girls that are only 5 months difference in age. Her daughter was in size 5s by the time she was 18 months old, and in size 6's before 2 (she's not fat at all), and my daughter has been a size 4 since she was a year old - she's 2.5 now.

My sister likes pullups/training pants and uses them. I hated them and never used them except for that first pack.

My girl potty trained at 2.5, size 4 - 2T/3T. My sister in law's girl didn't train until 3+ - and wore pull ups for a year.

I would concentrate your efforts on size 3/size 4 maybe even size 5 diapers since I heard that Wag's runs about a 1/2 size small. They are in that middle size for quite a while usually. I wouldn't get any more newborn or size one - as lots of babes don't wear newborn at all, and even are out of ones in a for a very very short time.

I have generally found that I wanted to move my kid to the next size up by the time they had reached the mid point of the diaper weight range. By that time, they were blowing out/leaking in the smaller sized diaper.

HTH.

It will also depend on if you are planning on breastfeeding or bottlefeeding. I breastfed my baby, and it's pretty common that breastfeed babies have a bowel movement every time they breastfeed for the first few weeks. And since they are fed more often than bottle fed babies (8-12 times a day), you will go through more diapers.

The Walgreens diapers do run a little small, so I wouldn't stock up on the NB size (make sure you take the leftover diapers from the hospital with you!) unless you are scheduling a C-section early and know your baby will be a little small.

My child went through alot of 2's and 3's, but at that time we mostly used Pampers and Huggies, so you may want to really stock up on the 3's since the diapers run a little small, they seem to be "shorter" than the others. I also prefer the Red Premium brand over the white package, the waistband just seems to fit better.

Every baby is different and can grow like on of the parents. I looked at my baby book and mine is exactly the same growth pattern I was.

My baby is 8 months old and the size 3s are getting a bit small, if that helps at all. I think she is a bit big for her age.

I am a little curious about bigger babies... We are in size 4 now (huggies/pampers) and have been a for a few months, he is only 9 months old and he is doing fine in the 4's (he is only 23 lbs, but is already 31" which is super long for his age)... anyway. I have been buying size 6 at walgreens, because we have plenty of size 4 in huggies/pampers/cvs for now and I figured it would be better to go bigger, since some people say walgreens run small anyway...

Any thoughts? I realize its a "crap shoot" :) on guessing, but I would appreciate any ideas/experiences with babies that run 90% or higher in height and weight....

Thanks
kc

DS used mainly 3s and 4s. He just potty-trained (finally!) at 3, and was in 4s and 5s in pull-ups.

DD is in 3s. She weighs 19 lbs and the Walgreens Size 3 premiums fit her perfectly. I just tried them with this sale and so far, I really like them.

Whatever sizes you stockpile, you'll want to be sure and have a variety of brands - at least at first. You never know if a particular brand might make your child break out. Diaper rash is no fun! (Although if it's an issue, try Boudreaux's Butt Paste.)

Be sure and save your receipts. And congratulations!!!

I responded to a similar post on another board, I thought maybe the OP was the same.

FYI, you can return without a receipt for a gift card, I wouldn't recommend doing it for a quantity like this, but I don't see why they wouldn't do a straight exchange if "down the road" you had too many of one size. (As long as the item is still on their shelves, same UPC and all.)

Other really good diaper deals will come along down the road too. And your child may not even be able to wear this particular store brand. You just don't know until you try.

But buying pullups that you aren't even going to use for almost 3 years seems like overkill to me.

I re-read the original post, if you are planning on exchanging the pull ups for smaller sizes that you are going to need sooner, that makes more sense, but I still think you have enough. This is way more than a start.
I counted 60 packages of diapers, that's got to be at least a year's worth of diapers.
and unless you have a premie, you will only need 1 package of newborn diapers

My DS is far from a baby now so I was just curious to what the replies were. I don't think I ever used newborn diapers since DS was almost 9 lbs at birth. What is scary to is that some brands just don't seem to work for certain babies. I never tried the Walgreens diapers so I can't give advice on that but if I recall correctly, I did not like Pampers for DS but had friends that swore by them.

If you overstock, just remember you can make a womens & childrens shelter near you very happy! (Save the receipts - possible tax write off if you do this??)

That's absolutely try about some brand's not working for some kids. My sister's 2 year old can only wear pamper's - she breaks out terrible from everything else.

I hated the smell of pamper's so bad - I wouldn't have used them if you paid me to use them. I used Luv's exclusively, they just fit my daughter so well, and worked so well, and were a good price. My sister-in-law's kid didn't fit in Luv's at all - a real chubberooo, they just didn't work for her, period. She was very loyal to Huggies, said everything else leaked for her chubby baby.
