I would be cautious about signing. My SIL taught her daughter how to use signs when she was still a baby, and now she's 2 and doesn't talk. They use a speech therapist right now, and he says a problem is that she can "show" everything, why say it? Read more about it and better talk to a specialist. I've never done signs with my ODS but I would carry him around the house and just point on stuff and help him repeat it. He's four now, and talks up a storm. I think different technics work for different kids. But ever since my SIL started using her speech therapist, we noticed great progress. Her DD signs a lot less and talks a lot more. Just my 2 cents

I agree with the other person who said that if your schools can't keep up with "smarter" children, you could end up with a bored kid. The school systems where I live basically herd the kids through like cattle. We are planning on sending her to a private school, so I went ahead and decided to try it.

We started the your baby can read about a week and a half ago with our daughter who just turned 2. She already loved to "read" books. She has really enjoyed the flashcards and dvd.

I think if your child is showing a huge interest in books, It can be beneficial for them.

Research has shown that signing does help with communication. Many speech therapists teach signs to kids who are struggling to speak because it is a form of communication. I have read a lot about it and spoken to our ped about teaching signs, and it is a great tool. I have signed equally with both my DDs. My 3 year old has a huge vocabulary and speaks very well - always has been ahead of the curve when it comes to language. My 19 month old speaks less and still signs a lot to me, and she is average when it comes to language. At her 18 month check, her doc asked if she was speaking 5-8 words, and she was. No more but no less. So it seems that signing has not affected their language at all.

The whole point of signing to toddlers is you sign more and say more at the same time. They will first sign it...and eventually will (barring certain disabilities) sign it and say it at the same time. And eventually they will stop signing it and just say it.

It is better for a child to have some form of communication then none at all. It sounds like the child needed early intervention services (which is what speech therapy is). We have used both for my daughter. We definitely needed the ST because they could come in , evaluate her. Tell me where she was lacking in skills, what to work on...and taught us a routine to help her talk more. At the same time we purchased the DVD's. She started signing immediately and was a far more pleasant child because she could sign "more" when she was still hungry. Or "down" when she wanted to get down...instead of just screaming. Which is what happened before. Singing and talking work quite well together.

First off, I really don't know much about it. However, my initial thought is not very positive. I've heard it just teaches memorization, not phonics. When we learned to read in school we were taught how to sound out words giving us the tools to read bigger words throughout life. If the baby just memorizes, they just learn those words. There is no tool to read future words. So initially I'm not too impressed. I am more apt to read to my baby & point out the words with my finger (like we did when we were first learning to read) while she follows along.

The program is being investigated due to complaints filed with the FTC.
