HELP Baby Proofing, need help doing it INexpensively

I am not sure if this is the correct forum or not (sorry if it isn't, I don't post a lot!) My daughter just started crawling (literally yesterday) and I have to find things like baby gates etc to baby proof the house. Every where I have looked over the past few weeks it seems to be very very expensive. Can anyone point me in the right direction of where I can get good quality for less money?
    TIA and Reps!

Just an FYI--we got a pretty basic gate when when got our puppies. While registering for baby stuff this weekend we saw the exact same gate in the baby section for almost double the price.

Even though it's the most basic one out there (wood frame) I've tripped and it caught my fall and the gate didn't fall over.

Thrift stores are great for baby gates. I got a great one at our Goodwill. You cal also get a kit for babyproofing other things like doorknobs, cabinets, sockets. I got ours at BRU for about $9.

I second thrift stores. I got a huge heavy duty baby gate there for $10, and saw the same online for $60. It was one of the big plastic ones that anchors into the wall.

I've also found the wooden ones very cheaply through local sites. If you have a military base nearby, try checking this site: www.baseyardsales.com

A lot of military people and locals will post their stuff on their and usually CHEAP. I've gotten some amazing deals just from people who are PCSing (moving) and are desperate to get at least something for their things before they toss them in trash. I also see a lot of very cheap and free baby stuff.

Just make sure you do things right and not too cheap. Remember sometimes gates at Goodwill or thrift type store may be there for a reason. Just remebmer to check it good though, because a good deal can be found there as long as the item is in good working order. I would avoid Babies R' Us unless you just want one stop shopping. If you check around places like Walmart / Target / Biglots even you can find deals on cabinet locks too. I would recommend paying a little extra and getting the magnetic ones though for the best results. Also remember if you are at the top of the stairs, always mount the gates, do not relay on pressure mount since these can fall over with enough weight. But with the right planning and a little time, you should be able to get the job done fairly cheap.

One of the few things you should not buy online is baby proofing items. The same items you can find new at Wal-Mart/Target or used at Goodwill are two to three times MORE expensive online generally even before shipping. I found this out the hard way.
