Default Book discussion! Children's Books Recommendations?

The short of it:
I'd love to see suggestions for preschool books, especially board books (since she will chew on them, not good for paper books). Heck, I'd love to see suggestions for books that will be good later on, too. I am pretty widely read, even in the area of kiddy lit, but I've never actually thought about books in the sense that they would be good for my daughter. So I'd like to hear other parents' favorites!

The long of it:

My daughter is really into books. I need some more because honestly if I have to read the infamous Fairy book one more time, or sing Wheels on the Bus or (as much as I love it) read Yummy, Yucky again...I will scream!

We have a very loose schedule.
She wakes up (never a set time), and we watch PBS in the morning (since Mommy needs a chance to wake up - Mommy is NOT a morning person). We watch Sesame Street, Super Why, Barney (UGH) and sometimes Clifford or a taped Veggie Tales or Wheels on the Bus Video.

Then it's naptime. After naptime is music/reading time until Mommy gets some adult TV time at 6 or so (Star Trek Voyager, TYVM). She can quite honestly fill several hours with me reading the same few books OVER and OVER and OVER.

One of my favorite books is, "Julius, Baby of the World" by Kevin Henkes. I first read this for a Kiddy Lit class in college. It is hilarious. (Amazon.com, Google Books) Really, I love anything by Kevin Henkes.

I also love Leslie Patricelli books. We have "Yummy, Yucky", "Yes yes, No no", "Binky", "Blanky", and "Quiet, Loud".

Another favorite are books illustrated by Annie Kubler. We have "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" and "Ten Little Fingers", and I plan on getting a few more.

It's been awhile since my kids read the little books, but I do remember a lot of board books with big bright pictures of simple objects...apple, ball, baby, etc. I absolutely love the books "Love you forever", "Guess how much I love you", and "Big Bird at bat". My kids are 11 and 12 and I still have copies of those!

Currently they seem to like the "Goosebumps" books and also anything written by Judy Blume and Beverly Cleary are must haves.

I second these!

My six year old DS is really into the Junie B. Jones series by Barbara Park, even though they are about a girl! They are hilarious and I frequently find myself .

Both the 6 yo and the 2 yo like the Franklin books.

Go Away, Big Green Monster by Ed Emberly

Any of the Robert McCloskey books - Make Way for Ducklings or Blueberries for Sal or others are great to read over and over to kids

Sandra Boynton board books are lots of fun for kids to "read" as they have only a few words per page - my fav was Doggies but I also loved Horns to Toes and in between

I read Goodnight Moon every night to the kids, and asked them to find the mouse. Before long, I didn't even have to see the pages, and I would be able to "read" (aka recite it) to them while driving.

Anything by Mo Willems is great!

All the Pigeon books:
Don't let the Pigeon Drive the Bus
The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog
Don't Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late
The Pigeon Wants a Puppy

Knuffle Bunny and Knuffle Bunny Too

Leonardo the Terrible Monster

The Elephant and Piggie books:
I am Invited to a Party
Today I Will Fly
My Friend is Sad
and there's another one I can't remember the name of

He also has 2 board books featuring the Pigeon:
The Pigeon Loves Things That Go
Pigeon Has Feelings Too

When DS was younger we also loved the Sandra Boynton books, especially Pajama Time, Snuggle Puppy, and Hippos Go Berserk

A favorite in our household is--

"And Tango Makes Three" by Justin Richardson

Some consider it to be to "liberal" but, it is a great story about acceptance.

Also, anything by Shel Silverstein is great! Funniest poems EVER!

"Goodnight Gecko" is my children's favorite - I used to live in Hawaii so it has special meaning for me.

Some paper books:
Harold and the Purple Crayon
If you Give a Pig a Pancake
If you Give a Moose a Muffin
If you Give a mouse a ???? (can't remember off the top of my head)
There were Ten in the Bed (and the little one said "Roll Over"
Little Critter books by Mercer Mayer
The Pokey Little Puppy
Is Your Mama a Llama by Deborah Guarino
One Moose, Twenty Mice by Clare Beaton
No Moon, No Milk by Chris Babcock

For board books:
Goodnight Moon
Curious George (comes in both paper and board books)
Miss Spider's Tea Party

One suggestion for you is rather than buying a bunch of books that will soon be outgrown, check out your local library. Ours even has a great collection of board books that can be checked out. This might be more for supervised reading time, but it will give you a wider variety without costing a lot of money.

Or if you really want to purchase the books, check out Ebay. You can get books pretty cheap off there.
