bump for help
I recently made a special effort to stop by family dollar after a EC episode. now usually I am not easily persuaded by this silly show, but I never really considered family dollar a place that I would get good coupon deals at..but after the show I decided to give them a shot.
First I went in the check the REACH toothbrush stock. I have many of the $2.50/2 coupons that have listerine, the reach toothbrush
and reach floss listed on it, all with "and/or" between them. I also had some $1/1 reach toothbrush or floss as well. so I picked up quite a few toothbrushes and floss as well. all in all I was going to have overage since the items were $1 each.
but they tried to scan the coupons and the register would accept them. now I know that the coupon was not coded for $2.50 off two, but instead it was coded for $2.50 off one(despite the wording) anyways, the register wouldn't take them and no one there knew how to fix the issue.
what should I have expected? nothing in the family dollar coupon policy states that overage is not allowed, nor does it state that they will not accept coupons over the amount of the actual product.
so what should have happened in my situation?
oh I do want to add that I had other items to eat the overage so the total would be in the positive.

I'm not sure if you read an old policy but the one on their website states "Coupons can be redeemed if the value of the coupon is greater than the price of the item. In this case, the value of the coupon will be discounted to match the price of the item." coupon policy
I'm not certain exactly how they should have handled it since I haven't had a coupon over the price there before, but I would imagine they should have handled it like at Walgreens and reduced the coupon value to match the price. If you go back and have issues I would suggest to them to manually reduce the coupon (and hopefully they know how to do it). HTH.
my main issue with that is changing the value of a coupon, no matter by whom can be considered coupon fraud. plus I would only get the discount of the product and not the face value of the item, while family dollar will get the full amount of the coupon back(i highly doubt they would call that company and say "hey you don't need to reimburse us for the total amount)
I have an issue with any store doing this. but thank you for your imput
Hello there, and I hope you enjoyed your experience at the family dollar. I work at one of the stores, they only get the set amount of coupon that is placed in the register. I had an incident where I want shopping at the store I work, and I accident used a coupon for the wrong product, and we won't get credit for it. So basically it has to be for the exact product on the coupon, and if it is a bogo get one it has to be the same sku. We don't accept coupons for free items yet we accept coupons that do make items free If you read the coupons on the fine print, it says "limited one per purchase" Watch for the cashier trying to make you do seperate orders. "one per purchase" will be for ex: I go to the store to buy a box of slim jims, I have a coupon for a 1.00 off one, and but I realized I have two, I can buy two boxes of the slim jims, and use both coupons. I hope I helped you the best I can.
I appreciate your comment, but I wasn't trying to buy anything that wasn't included on either of the coupons. I was getting the reach toothbrushes and reach floss, neither coupon has size or type restrictions but neither coupon worked. also the wording on one coupon was confusing to the cashier and "manager" on duty. the computer wouldn't accept any coupons at all. I am going to try this again before my coupons expire and see how it goes.
I understand what you're saying. I think the problem with most FDs is their jurassic registers that have not been upgraded/updated in years!
From my experience, they can do something about it IF (that's a big IF) the SM is knowledgeable in tinkering with the register to accept coupons. From using the Queen by CG MQs the previous months, neither the $1/1 nor the $2.50/2 any CG product scanned BUT because the SM wanted the sale, she was able to make it work by scanning the coupon right after the item i.e, for 2 items marked $2 and $1, they scanned the $2.50/2 coupon right after them and same with the $1 item with $1 MQ. It took several buttons for her to push but in the end, they took the coupons and made a sale.
In the past, store management would just give back the coupon and end up not having a sale. That is one reason why I think this new manager has stayed there for a while compared to the rest who left in one or two months. Good for customers now and for the current manager since her store is moving their products
In dollar stores like DG and FD, having a knowledgeable manager who wants to sell makes all the difference when it comes to customers using coupons.
it wasn't just a jurassic computer system but my cashier was nearly prehistoric herself. but anyways....
I believe I remember them trying what you described; scan one item, then scan the coupon for it...but still didn't work and the coupon was not OVER the value of the coupon. at that point I lost hope for my purchase and called it a day. customers were piling up behind me and the other computer messed up, so I called it quits. haven't made it to fd yet to try again. hopefully someone will be able to help me next time
well I made an attempt today, but someone had already cleaned the store out of toothbrushes and floss. oh well. happy new year!
