    HELP college scholarship searching

DD17 got accepted to a great school. After "some" grants and scholarships from the school we still have to come up with $6300 plus books for the year! And that amount is only if she gets the alumni scholarship we are hoping for, gets three more points on her ACT and ....becomes Baptist , something we are willing to do for $1200 a year.

We checked out FastWeb, but don't know where else to look. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Congratulations to dd. Go to fastweb.com and have her fill out a profile and search for additional scholarships. My daugther received 11 scholarships her highschool year and being a single mom it was an answer to prayer. There are a lot of scholarships out there for volunteer work, community service etc. I also taught a scholarship class for parents through our continued education classes after daughter received her scholarships to help other families find scholarships. If I can be of assistance lmk.

Also, let others know that you are looking for scholarships. My parents were told about one for me because someone they bowled with was involved in an organization that was sponsoring a scholarship that no one had applied for and they thought I had a good chance at getting it. All I had to do was write a short essay. Admittedly it had to be creative on my part because I had never done the activity they wanted me to write about ... but they never said it had to be a personal experience. =) Anyway, let others know and check out local groups. Those $500 here and there scholarships add up.
PM me when you post on the DB, I'll respond faster.

My son won one from our local credit union. Also check out collegeboard.com (or google it if that's not the exact address).

Congratulations! When I was an undergraduate I got a text book scholarship from the American Association of University Women (AAUW) - they may have money available. Also, look for local scholarships - it may be worth it for her to go meet with a local college counselor at a community college or University near you to see what they direct their students to in terms of local funding.

GO to the high school counselor's office and meet with him/her personally. Then continue to go in every weeke or so...make yourself known that you are there. Pretty soon, they will start putting copies of all the new scholarships in a pile for you. GO, yes, physically go, to other high schools as well.

    Congrats to your daughter!

I just wanted to warn you about FastWeb..make a separate address for them, and be prepared for the junk mail.

I am in my Sr. year of college, and still getting mail up the wazoo from them for SAT prep, etc.

They are a great aggregator for scholarships. Everyone uses them though, so it ends up being just a contest of luck more than anything.

I would agree with the suggestion to get friendly with the high school counsellor's office.
