    QUESTION Reusable Bag Question

I have heard that Dillon's gives you 5¢ off your order for every reusable bag you bring with you. I have yet to remember to take them with me. While this is an awesome program, I have a couple questions.

If you are buying only free items after q's, how does that play in? Will you go in the negative before tax? I don't think that's an issue, just curious.

Also, is there a limit to the amount that you can bring with you? I mean, one bag per item, or does the cashier have the right to use their discretion? If I go in and buy 10 of the Tennessee Pride gravy packages, which are free after q's this week, and I bring (I don't know...) 5 bags with me, will they take off 25¢? I know you won't need 5 bags for those, and you would go into the negative. :shrug7:

I hope my questions make sense. I can see how this could be beneficial for couponers like us, who get their totals down to a few dollars, but I don't want to abuse it either.

    TIA

I've never gotten out of Dillon's with only free items so I don't know about your first question. As for your second question, I think the cashier would only take off $.05 per bag used. I know if I have a shopping cart full the cashiers will count how many bags I have and take that amount off but if I have a smaller purchase they take off how many bags were used. I love using my reusable grocery bags. They hold a lot more groceries than plastic sacks, they hold up better, stack in the trunk better, etc... HTH.

I always estimate how many I'll use when they ask how many bags I have. I'll say something like "I have ten, but we'll probably only use five". Sometimes we use less than they put in, sometimes more. I figure it evens out in the end. I don't think it's right to take off five if you know you'll only use one.

I'm with Kim that I love my bags! So much easier unloading groceries when I have five bags that literally would be fifteen bags of the plastic handled bags. They're great!

Oh, I know it's not right, and I wouldn't do that... just wondering how they determine how much to take off. Since I've never done it before, I didn't know if they did it at the beginning or the end. It'd be harder to judge at the beginning, since you don't really know how many you'll use till they're bagging it up.

What everyone else said. I have it happen both ways, they just count my bags and take my $ off or they count what bags I have filled up.

Oh, really? I've only ever gotten 5 cents off for however many bags I've brought! Admittedly, I've only brought more than one bag twice, but I know I've never gotten more than 5c off. I'll have to fight for my extra couple of cents next time!

ETA: Rereading your posts both before and after me, I bet it's because I usually go through the self-checkout line. No bagger to hand my bags to, so half the time, the self-checkout person probably doesn't even notice. No matter, it's definitely on my list for the future. More often than not, I end up looking like this guy -->
with more packages than my arms can handle and no bags at all, which I think I should get *double* bag credit for, LOL!

I guage how many I think I will need (based on my list) before I go into the store. The cashier usually takes the bag credit off right away as I hand them the bags. Only once I think did the cashier totally forget to give me my credit- so I politely remind them if they forget! I have never had a totally free purchase either, so don't know what they would do if that ever happened!
