Default Attn. Cake Experts! Please help!

I have just purchased a cast iron bundt pan shaped like a locomotive.

I know that if I ice it, it won't show the shape very well. So, here's my question--can I dye the cake batter? For example, if I do a white cake can I dye it blue with an icing color??

Also, does anyone know a good spot to find info on how to adjust a cake mix (if possible) for a bundt pan?

Thank you so much !!!

You could use a poured fondant icing. It's the icing used on petit fours and bundt cakes. My grandma used one on her pound cake.

All Recipes has a good one. Their instruction say to coat with buttercream but that is not necessary.

It can be tinted. Just be sure to make the icing color a smidge lighter than what you eventually want--most sugar icings will darken as they dry. If you are unsure of the color, mix a small amount on a plate and let dry. Check in a few hours to see how dark it got.

When tinting, either icing-fondant-or batter, it is best to use either a powder icing tint or a paste.......they will give you better color than food coloring and will not thin the icing. You can them at WalMart, Hobby Lobby or Michaels with the Wilton cake and candy supplies.

Also, as a pp said about the icing getting darker after a while-----butter cream icings are the worst about this. HTH Good Luck.

My dh ended up making the cake--the trouble was that he was using a white cake mix and he used whole eggs instead of egg whites, so instead of the cake being blue, it was green! Oh well, it was still cute. We didn't realize that even if the cake itself was blue or green the outside would still be brown. So we did the whole microwave the canned frosting and pour over thing. It didn't work all that well--it just didn't cover evenly. So I will have to try one of your other techniques next time!

You could decorate it with candies like a gingerbread house and just attach candies with frosting. If you color the batter it will still be brown on the outside so the color might look muddy.
