IMO if you don't like playing tetris..get an upright.
I'm asking for a deep freezer (or a stand up freezer) for Christmas this year. I'm tired of playing 3D Tetris just to find out that the stuff I got for free/cheap has to be eaten for dinner tonight. :)
I have a fairly large basement, so storage shouldn't be a problem. I am a fairly organized person, but DH would rather just toss it in (and he puts away groceries from time to time).
My questions are:
1. What kind of freezers do you wonderful couponers have?
2. Would you recommend them to your friend or your enemy?
3. Why?
4. How much should I expect to pay for a freezer?
in advance!
IMO if you don't like playing tetris..get an upright.

We have a chest freezer.... I hate it... my husband bought it--- meaning well.... Go for the upright freezer. The frozen food shuffle is not fun. I have started to keep a list of what is in it.... it helps a little.
I have a chest I keep breads/cookies and those kind of things in there..LOL and things I want to hide form everyone else....I have a huge upright and even tho i have to dig some it is so much better than the chest. It more of just moving the item in front(on each shelf) to see what is behind it verse having to take everything out to get to the item in the very bottom.
So upright..if you are going with to buy make sure if you shop at lowe's to use a coupon..lol like I hate to tell you that..

The queen of April Fools was here.
i have one of each. love the deep freeze as i always know the door is close, hate it because i have to dig for everything and i mean everything! and if i need something at the bottom, i have to pull everythign out and set it on the floor and then get what i need and then put it back
upright is nice as it has shelves, easier to stack stuff, you can get them with a pull out drawer (i used mine for cheese) and you can put stuff in the doors. easier to get to stuf, easier to see stuff and really takes up less space.
we just got a larger upright for $600. it has an alarm on it incase you leave it open, and will tell you how long the power was out if it goes out. it also has a suction when you shut it so it is shut.

I pretend tomushrooms. It makes it so much easier to kill them.
Did ya ever try & open it back up immediatly after you shut it?? You'll pull your arm outta socket!!But it's an amazing feature!!! It's shut & shut good!!
OP: I just got a new Whirlpool Upright & it's GLORIOUS!!
My last freezer was 29 years old - the old girl was still tickin' but she made me kind of nervous - plus I wasn't fond of doing an arctic archeological dig just to find pizza rolls!!!
So my vote would be for the upright!!
Be sure to consider which way you want the door to open on the freezer. This new freezer came with reversable brackets that we were able to change to make it open the opposite direction coz of the spot that it is in in our garage - and now all is right with the world!!

I have a very small chest freezer. It would not be my first choice but I only have limited space. Yes, we do have a 400 sq. ft. building behind our house where we could put an upright freezer but it would not be very feasible, especially in the winter when we are snowed in. If you can afford the upright and have room for it, get that.
We have an upright. About 5 or 6 years ago, I got an unexpected check in the mail. I told my husband that the check was going to buy a freezer! I insisted on an upright freezer. I wanted to be able to open the door and see what I want to grab...not dig through stuff to get to it. I find that it's easier to keep organized, and to rotate what I buy. I can't remember what I paid for it. It was on clearance at Home Depot.
When our chest freezer finally dies, I'm getting an upright. I'm way too short to reach things in the bottom of a chest freezer!
We have an upright purchased from Sears (on sale) when we purchased our refrigerator so both were delivered at same time. I still play 3d tetris with my upright but am getting ready to go through it, take out everything on each shelf (put in cooler) and then toss what looks to be too old to use. Then I am going to use plastic milk type crates to place each type of food (beef, pork, chicken, veggies, etc) because everything stacks in our freezer and when it's full you have to watch your toes when the inevitable landslide occurs......I remember chest type freezers from when I was a kid. No way would I have one of those. And PP, you are right about trying to open the door just after you've closed it. It does about jerk your arm off :)
