At least for now you can make free call directly from your computer through google... just buy a cheap microphone from walmart or somewhere else and your all set and ready to go.

We have a magic jack - and I HATE it. I only use my cell phone more because I can't stand it. It is not very reliable, about 1/4 of the time when someone is trying to call us, the call doesn't even ring in. It is tolerable but not wonderful by any means.

Then how did PP use it with laptops? If it really has to be on a hardwired pc that's a deal breaker for me.

    Thanks!

I know it's not the same thing but SafeLink Wireless offers FREE cell phones in certain circumstances. From what I was reading on their website it is available in New York. You do have to be receiving some government help. IE food stamps, medicaid, section 8 housing, SSI, disability, ect.
My mother has one of these phones and got the phone and 125 minutes a month with the "package" she chose. It's not a lot, but its free and works in an emergency and if charged when the power is off. Also the minutes will roll over every month (unless you choose the 250 minutes option)

    Good luck!

You can use it wireless, we tried but I found that it was more annoying than it was worth. Plugged into a hardwired modem it works perfectly, you can't tell it's VOIP at all...
