HELP Opinions on GE washer/dryer set from Home Depot

Looking at the low end, top load washer and accompanying dryer. Would like your opinions and experiences with GE washer/dryers.

I have a neighbor who is in the appliance repair business and he says to not buy GE, as they are not reliable. In contrast, the customer reviews I have read online have given GEs 4 and 5 stars.

Whirlpool is not sold by HD. I am pretty well locked in to buying at HD, as they just opened a credit line for me. However, it is not large enough to get one of the better sets, so I have to stay with the lower end ones.

Tell me about your experience with GE washers/dryers.

    Thanks, and Happy New Year!

My fiance is in the appliance repair business as well. To quote him when I asked about GE wash/dryer: "It would not be my first choice." One of the issues with GE besides their life span is that if/when it needs to be repaired it will be extremely pricey. I just checked the HD website. Although Whirlpool is not sold by HD, they do sell Maytag which is made by Whirlpool.

I hope this helps. Good luck!

EDIT: For pricing - I think HD is advertising 10% off right now too. Not sure if this is on reg price or sale. Also, check for any rebates on select brands/models on the HD website.

    BamaLady,

We have a 5+ yo GE 3.5 cu ft TL Washer model #WJRR4170E and it bit the dust last night - stopped spinning. There is a possibility we might be able to repair it for around $160.00 not including any labor. Unfortunately, my opinion of GE is not a great one. I have been talking to someone in the major appliance field and their comment was that they considered GE to be disposable.
So, <sigh> we are also looking at purchasing a washer.
I know everyone has their own experiences and opinions...but thought I would offer up ours.
Best of luck to you in finding a good W/D!

    many blessings,
    hamrickdt

Thanks, everyone...guess I've got to do some more looking.

Remember when appliances lasted for years and years, and were sturdy and dependable?

I HATE my GE washer. The dryer is fine.

I would avoid maytag like the plague.

I like my whirlpool front load washer and dryer. I avoid GE and Maytag with all I can. My parents own an appliance business and they sell them, but try to get the customers to lean toward the Whirlpool. Whirlpool is also GREAT about service. If you can, you may want to shop around for prices, some of the smaller stores might be able to give you a small discount on them as well and may be able to open a credit like, such as 24 months same as cash. They are somewhat better about service too, or so I think.

I had a maytag that I had for 17 years without a single problem, but when we had to sell our house because my husband could no longer work we left it there, I couldn't lift it to move it into the truck myself and I had no help...I moved everything I could and what I could not move we left in the house. We bought a new Maytag and had it delivered to our new house and though it has only been 4 years it is still going strong.
My dd has a maytag also (for 6 or 7 years now) and has had no problems with hers.

good luck and I hope whatever you choose it lasts for many, many problem free years.

I have a Kenmore W/D set that is going strong after 13 years. I HATE the CS from Sears, but have been happy with their appliances (also have a Kenmore micro, DW & stove). Another thought is to check out warehouse and scratch & dent models (I know Sears has several of these throughout the country). Good luck - a big purchase to make right after the holidays :)
