Have you looked at IKEA? My in-laws are currently remodeling two kitchens using almost exclusively IKEA products. Not sure on granite countertops, but they do gorgeous butcher block ones. :-)

I am going to say the same thing about Ikea cabinets. Consumer Reports rates them very well every year. I would visit local places (not home depot) for your flooring and countertops. I am guessing that you could play "let's make a deal" pretty easily right now.

Check out craigslist under materials. Also great ideas at the gardenweb forums under kitchens.

I will tell you, do NOT get your cabinets at Lowes or Home Depot, you may think they are cheaper, but they really aren't...when we did our kitchen, The Depot quoted me $7k more for standard off the rack cabinets than I got for semi custom through a design center...with all the bells & whistles that were available.

Most good size cities have a discount cabinet / kitchen/ bathroom center... usually they are more frequented by house builders etc. It is usually stuff that is marked/dented scratched etc. in a really tiny way like a book shelf with a 1/2 scratch on the side or stuff that is being discontinued by a dealer. It's usually about 50-75% off of retail price... You often really have to search and they aren't always in the nicest part of town but if you find one they can be a steal... and often they are thrown together as a hodge podge roughly by room... it takes me a few hours to walk through ours when I go... I got a beautiful oak pantry cabinet set for my dining room with 11 cabinets and with a buffet middle that has one 2 inch gash on a bottom shelf in the back...no one but me will ever know it's there... it retailed about 2500-3000 and we bought it for $500. Maybe pull out your yellow pages and see if you have something like it in your city.
