    QUESTION Buying meat in bulk

Does anyone here ever purchase meat in bundles (bulk) . I have been checking some local store prices ,seems the prices are all over the place .

Just would love to hear if anyone buys meat this way ..

I buy meat in bulk when its cheaper. Usually to be bulk is just buying a bunch of the 5 lbs things of hamburger meat when its cheap like 1.69/lb vs 2.69. Sometimes stores like sams aren't a better deal with their bulk sizes on meat. Sometimes they are like on salmon or lamb but i rarely ever bought it cause its expensive.

Well I actually meant that there are stores here where they have bundle packs .This is like a varied selection of hamburger ,chicken, pork chops, and or steaks and polish sausage and the like .

I don't know if you have an aldi by you but sometimes they have good deals. You can get 80-90% lean ground beef for a decent price. The store puts a $2.00 off sticker on the package when it gets closer to the expiration date. They sell the ground beef in packages of either 1-2 pounds or you can get the big 5lb one and divide it yourself. They also have chicken, turkey, ham at reasonable prices. Other stores reduce for clearance the price of meat as it gets closer to the expiration date as well. Not sure exactly what date each store does this but if you keep an eye out at your local store you will catch on in no time. Hope this helps.

    Thanks for the info ..

I guess I am just a picky person when it comes to buying meat . I have tried to buy meat which is marked down and place it straight in the freezer ,only to defrost it and have it smell awful and have to toss it in the trash .
I guess I am alone in feeling like this but I don't wish to have to toss out things ,just because I got it cheap .
There is only one place I will buy hamburger because its red and doesn't smell .
Its not cheap but I have bought hamburger eleswhere ,and I open the package and in the middle is brown and smells sour .Then I have to return it to the store .

I wouldn't call that picky - I'd call that smart!

Unfortunately, some stores don't "take good care of their meat", imo. There is one store in the next town where I've seen displays of Kraft singles & whole beef briskets out in the aisles. No refrigeration. Just a huge display of cheese. I would never buy meat there.

This same chain has stores in my town. One of these is 1 mile away from my house. We've bought meat there before - no mark down or anything, just sale priced - and it looked fine. When we got home? It smelled rank. And this is what? a five minute drive?!

However, we buy meat at Albertsons and even if it's marked down, it's still good. It's better quality, and I guess they refrigerate it better. So basically, choose your meat-buying stores wisely!

I don't buy meat in bulk - my teeny-tiny freezer doesn't let me - so other than that I can't really help. =/

Thanks for your post ,I am glad to see I am not the only one who feels this way .Oh and yes I always bought my meat at Albertson when I lived near one .Where I am now they don't have that store thats why I am still searching around .

We live on a ranch and have our meat processed for us. There is a small mom and pop grocery store in town that takes grain fed beef and sells it in bundle packages. When we have our meat processed it cost us 1.00lb no matter what. I know people buy the bundle packages and are very happy with it. Because it is so fresh. If you live in a small town you might see if someone is offering to sell beef right from the farm. Lots of times you can half a beef which gives you tons of meat, which you know is good, and is a great price.

I have always wondered about doing this ,I just am not sure how I would find a farm that does this .(don't live in a small town but have many small towns near by )

Dh just got a list from the butcher and it seemed the prices were higher then grocery stores..however it would be fresh and better quality. My next door neighbors purchase 1/2 a cow and have it cut but I"m not sure the cost. I would check with butchers in the area.
