QUESTION Can you explain pros/cons of propane? Looking for a house...

DF and I have been looking for a house. We know what we want, however all the houses we are interested in use propane. We are looking for a house kind of out of the way, not on top of the neighbors. I have heard this is really expensive, and he has been nixing them almost immediately. I however, don't know anything about it, never having lived in a house that uses propane. Any help would be appreciated.

We had it for cooking only and it was cheap. I thought it was cheaper then elec.
I could be wrong if you add the heating to it. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. I'm sure others will post some good info for you.

Well just to give you a price guide... last year it ran about $3 a gallon.. and the minimum fill for any company out here is 200 gallons... so about $600 per fill. Depending on the size of your house and all that stuff, you're probably looking at 2-3 fills at least... possibly 4 per winter. I have a small house and keep the heat about 68 all winter... 60 at night. I had a little left to start the winter but ended up with 2 fills at right around $1200. I'll have to get another fill in August or September to start the winter.. HTH a little

We use propane for both heating and cooking. It is cheaper than electric, I'd say its comparable to natural gas. It really depends on a lot of factors such as size of the house, how warm you keep your house, and the area of the country you live in. We have a 2500 sq. ft house and like it really warm in the winter. Propane seems to be a 'hotter' heat than natural gas. We have the option to pre-buy at the beginning of the heating season and I think most companies offer this. They fill up the tank in October and come around about every 4-6 weeks in the winter. Then they fill it up in May and don't come back until October. Now, two winters ago, we locked in at $1.89/gallon. This past winter we did the pre-buy at $2.89 a gallon, which turned out to be stupid because the cost went down during the heating season. But thats the chance you take. You don't have to pre-buy, but then you pay the fluctuating price each fill up. HTH!
