I have a loved one who is an RSO (registered sex offender) he took a plea to something he did not do, after a hung jury because the DA didn't care if "MR. X" was guilty or not, and just wanted to get a conviction with little to no evidence...and said as much, we overheard her, and it made no difference.
I have been involved with the families of RSOs for 3+ years now, and have heard it all (or so I thought)
In some states, there are people on thre registry for: skinny dipping, mooning, streaking, having sex inside their cars, changing clothes in their cars, being caught having sex in "public places" such as a wooded area, and the list goes on and on, and the defendants get younger and younger.
On top of that: inmany states the So's age continues to progress on the registry while the "victim's" doesn't
To use this boy as an example: he could be 35 and still have his victim listed as being 5 yrs. old...which makes people think he's a total perv.
I sometimes get blasted when I say, the laws and the registry need an overhaul...but they really do.
Most of us, could be sex offenders under one law or another in some state.
I have to ask, how does any of the above keep children safe?
I am the survivor of childhood sexual abuse, and I feel that most of the laws and the registry, as it stands today, is a slap in the face to those who have actually been abused.
Sorry, for the vent:
i've really thought about a t-shirt that says
You Could be a Sex Offender if you've done any of the following:
and then list every asinine thing someone's been registered for.
