Default Hurricane Irene - your stockpile secure?

For those in the potential path of Irene, if you're watching the storm track information available, *now* is the time to prepare.

Those in FL know how long a power outage can be and you could lose everything you have stockpiled in your freezer(s) and fridge. Those upland from FL - SC, NC, GA also know from past experiences as well.

If you don't have a generator to keep power running for those appliances, now, not the end of the week, is the time to be getting a generator and the gas to keep it running for a long time.

Just a heads up because this hurricane looks like it could potentially hit a large area of land from FL all the way to, and including, far inland NC.

When Hurricane Fran hit Raleigh NC in 1996, it hit us as a Tropical Storm only and much of Raleigh was without power for 2 weeks.

Praying for all in the path of this storm and hoping you'll be safe!

I am near the Gulf coast, and so far it's looking like we are safe from any direct hit from this one. We usually keep emergency supplies on hand, and when it looks bad, we'll do things like fill both bathtubs with clean water as well as filling a lot of mason jars and gallon jugs. We have considered getting a generator and we still may eventually, but I've really been trying to build more of a stockpile of shelf stable goods than frozen. I have a couple of freezers and would really like to get that down to one. I'd hate to lose everything, but I guess we'll still eat. The only way a generator will be practical for us is if it's one of those permanently installed and secure ones because in the event of a longterm power outage and we still have to go to work, one of those little portable jobs left running in my neighborhood is almost guaranteed to be stolen.

Anyway, 'tis the season! Coastal people need to be considering their emergency plans.

During fran ages ago we lost power for only 18 hrs. Tomorow or something as long as ds is feeling better and back at school we will be going out and getting bottled water and flashlights then to secure the trampoline somehow. And put all the loose toys in the shed. Our new windows have a lifetime warranty at least. But the 2 in my bedroom and upstairs bathroom are not new . Im waiting for a tree to go through those windows instead lol. This past weekend we had a storm with bad lightning and the lightning hit close by if not our house we heard this loud pop and now the a/c in our den is out. Im thinking after getting water and flashlights we should be ready. OH and then we are parking the vehicles under the carport out back to hopefully sheild from any flying debri,. the projection they had yesterday it was still showing if it hit us this weekend we would be getting 90mph winds.

We bought a generator 9 years ago after Isabel hit. Luckily we got reimbursed for it by the state of VA. Hubby needs to take it out and fire it up and buy extra gas.

Make your own ice blocks! Will stay frozen way longer then regular ice. When we were without power for about 4 days after a tornado hit in Missouri it drove me nuts that no one in Missouri sold ice blocks...only regular ice.

    Good luck everyone!
