My first grader had his recess/ free time after lunch...
Lunch is at 11:10- 11:40
Then recess time is at 12:55-1:25
Hope this helps you. :)
Hi, I don't know how to do a poll, so if you don't mind responding I'd love to know...when does your elementary age child have recess, before or after lunch? My husband and I got in an argument about it, and I'd love to know if I'm wrong (I'm lying, I really want proof he's wrong, but I digress), so help me out!![]()

Recess? No such thing. The kids eat in the cafeteria then line up in the hall to wait for their teachers. What do you think of that?
And P.S. That's for 3rd, 4th, and 5th. (I don't know about the lower grades)
My DD who is in 4th grade has two recesses. One in the morning and one after lunch. Not sure how long they are I will have to ask her.

My daughter is no longer in elementary but when she was, she had two recesses. One was short. One was before and one was after.
Wow, that seems so unfair! Recess is such an integral part of elementary school, they are little kids, they NEED to burn off the energy (and all of those lunchtime calories), and get a mental break! How do they expect them to be good students without any downtime? I wonder how high the schools percentage of discipline issues is? Why do the teachers get a longer lunch break then the students, do they deserve special treatment? That may be something to bring up to the PTO.
What a lucky girl! I bet she does well in school.
Thanks for the replies, Dh and I were discussing DD's behavior in school, and actually managed to get in an arguement over the timing of recess! It doesn't occur to him that the way they managed recess 43 years ago in his native country, may not be the same way they do it here, for his 5 year old. Also, he was 6 when he attended kindergarten, and he doesn't understand how much more is required of the children these days. Her teacher even stated that she's 22 (I could have given birth to her, how sick is that?), and kindergarten is completely different than it was for her.
DD is a young kindergartner, as she just made the birthday cut off by 29 days. She's the only one in her class that isn't 6, or just about to turn 6, so she's having a bit of trouble adjusting to the expectations for behavior. DH asked why she wasn't getting a morning snack (she gets "hangry" like her momma). I told him that it was because they have a short morning and there is no time for snack. He argued that she could have her snack at recess, so I explained she has lunch at 11:00, and his response was that it makes no sense, why can't she just have a snack at recess..blah blah. When I told them they have lunch before recess here he said I was crazy, of course they ALWAYS have lunch after recess, and I make no sense....so I was checking to make sure I made sense

Thanks for the reply Julie, I have to spread the love before I rep you again lol.
Your dd was lucky as well, it makes so much sense for them to have a recess break in the am, and one in the pm. Unfortunately dd's school has over 600 (at last count, as they added quite a few new kindergarten classes this year, so it may be more) students, so I think it's a logistics problem for them.![]()

My boys have October birthdays and it has been and issue each year with almost each teacher about the age situation. My boys did the half day pre k thing 3 turning 4, kindergarten 4 turning 5 now first grade 5 turning 6.. Each year after their birthdays pass the teacher starts in with the whole how my kid is lacking in this or that. Personally I take it all with a grain of salt! My boys have a TON of energy and sure they might not want to sit still and everything but they do know their stuff. I have a first grade teacher that is taking his free time a way for one reason or another and it really bugs me that she does that for the fact that he really needs that time to burn excess energy up.
