Well, I've TRIED meal planning for a long time, but I'm guessing that is no help. It's always too hard for me to stick to cause I either forget to thaw something, run out of another thing, or just decide that whatever is on the menu for the day doesn't sound good. I only really every get through about 2 weeks before it all goes to crap

I, personally, go on an 8 week rotating schedule. Makes it simple, and I have the shopping lists and recipes all printed out and filed in a binder.

When my husband travels, that mostly goes out the window. I do cook for the girls, but they are a little less demanding :)

I've been meal planning for about five years. The best advice I can offer is that no one method works for everyone. Some people need to plan all components of each meal very specifically; some people are content with planning to make these five main dishes sometime during the week.
My first reaction is that 12 weeks is a long time for me.
I generally put a blank month before me and fill in any special days (holidays, birthdays, etc) that require special foods.
Secondly, I note any days where, for example, I'll be away most of the day and need dinner fast. Maybe I'll just write "crock pot" on those days until it gets closer.
My next step is to plan one week at a time. Again, I try to accommodate those days when we have to eat early or late because of activities.
Lastly, unless all leftovers are destined for the next day's lunch, plan a day every once in a while for "leftover buffet."
Please PM me for trades; the database messes with my mind.
