I am right there with you. I WANT that Kindle Fire. But, mean time you can get the free Kindle app on your iPod Touch and read those free Pixel of Ink books. I deleted about half my songs (that I never listened to anyway) off my iPod to make room for kindle books.

I've had a nook since February and I LOVE it! The Cheap is a blog that has free and cheap books in all genres, and they have a Kindle page on Facebook: Kindle on the Cheap | Facebook

Also, like another poster said above, you can pay a small fee to join another area/state's digital ebook rental site. (or, have you checked to see what is available for Missouri? Here in Wisconsin you have to visit another website that is different from your local library).

Here's an idea...if you want to get your daughter some of the free books in advance. When I sign in with my Amazon ID to get one of the books, it always asks me if I want the book to go on my Kindle for iPod or Kindle for PC. If you make your daughter an Amazon ID (or use hers if she already has one) you can start putting some free books into the account on your PC. It is a really easy click to switch them from Kindle PC to another device. Then on Christmas she will already have some books to choose from in her library. The free books change every day and sometimes if you miss the time frame, the next day they are back to 2.99 or whatever. You can collect some frees for her that will probably not be free after Christmas.

My Library just started doing Kindles. I had been using a Nook App to check out books and was leaning towards a Nook. I got my Daughter a Nook last year for Christmas she was 14 and she has never read so much. She is also an avid reader but now even more. You will not regret getting one.
